We're talking athlete, no just being able to dominate one's own sport.

If you want to talk about people dominating a sport, Edwin Moses comes to my mind.

Not really. he started missing a lot of races and dodging people who wanted to race him. towards the end he was running just a few times a year if that. I dont think he dominated in the end and i dont think he dominated long to be really considered a dominate figure.

Wilt. NCAA quarter mile champ. Set scoring records at Philly because they had no one else to score. Went to LA where they had scorers and led the league in assists (I think he was #1.) and won championship. Starred on world championship volleyball team after retiring from basketball. Was seriously considered as an opponent for Floyd Patterson for the World Heavyweight Championship. (That was back when we only had 1 and everyone knew who it was.)

Ty Cobb.
OR
Eddy Merckx
maybe Jim Brown

these people dominated their sport. If they had played other sports with the passion they played their sport in they would have been great.

Most tremendous athletes...

Lance Armstrong
Dan Gable

Lance Armstrong does things that probably no one else can do. He is in tremendous physical shape. ESPN did an article on him and they said that his lungs are about 150% that of another athlete. When at rest his heart beats is like 30 beats a minute (incredibly slow) and when riding it will beat 200 beats per minute.

Dan Gable is the wrestler from the 70s and he was absolutely dominant. In the '72 Olympics no one even scored a point on him. What makes it even more impressive is that the Soviet Union was gunning for him for 4 years. Their whole goal was to find and train a man who could defeat Gable. And the Russians thought they had found him, they thought there was no chance this guy could lose. (ala Rocky 4 Ivan Drago) Gable defeated 3 of the 6 wrestlers by pin, something that is VERY rare in the Olympics. Another match he beat a guy 20-0. He beat the Russian 3-0 for the gold medal. He also wrestled 4 years of college and lost only 1 match. (over 120 matches) Wrestling is probably the most physically trying and grueling sports out there. (that are legal at least)

Note: 182-1 in high school and college combined.
