happy he said it wuz #14 when he wuz little that could b a long time ago. look i like getting money bcuz i get to pick out exactly wut i want without any1 screwing up. also i rarely get the 20 bucks a week that i am supposed to so my birthday and christmas r the only times that i really get any money besides alittle money on other holidays. i also use the money for other things besides just buying stuff. i love playing poker and i do that alot with my cousins and my aunt whenever i see them. also its good to have incase i wanna go to the movies or something. and of course i kno how to get more money from ppl. my last vacation i went to point pleasant with my dads side of the family. i got there with $80 and ended up spending $180 while i wuz down there all of the money had been either mine from other things like allowance or winnings from poker or money i wuz given to spend on vacation by my grandma, my aunt, and my uncle. my cousin schef is also very good at that he ended up leaving w/ more money than he came down with.

i dont have an allowance, never did, i would have to plead to get the money to get to go to the movies, until i learned that my dad would ALWAYS give money when i wanted it, and always gives me too much. now i ask if i can go to the movies, and he gives me a 20, so i end up with more money when i finish. i also got a job, and i spend all my money on video games. i ask for videogames for christmas a lot. also, if you want to maximize christmas stuff, then what you do is figure out how much people give, and then ask for something that is around $10 more than usually they spend. i like presents. what would you do if on christmas morning they said "heres some money, were done" i would hate it, i guess my childish side still LOVES opening presents to see what i get, and the money isnt worth it when i can open presents instead.

This question is kind of random but why do people who don't believe in God still celebrate Christmas? But anyway I never got an allowance and have always liked getting presents and not money, because it is more fun.

actually they usually do some other holiday, cant remember name, "kwanzaa" or something. if Kwanzaa is a real religious thing, then im sorry, didnt mean to insult anyone, but they actually have their own type of christmas, so their kids dont go "believing in God" and such. PLEASE NO RELIGIOUS BATTLES, I DONT MIND POLITICS, but religious, then it is just bad.

Kwanza is a holliday celebrated mainly in Africa and by blacks and is kind of religious. Its kind of funny because after you being accused of being racist this came up.

So, Kwanzaa turns out to be strickly cultural, which makes it more like Thanksgiving than Christmas. Of course, a lot of holidays are--or have become--mostly cultural. Christmas certianly has. And it's not without some reason, either. When Christianity spread across the world, it had a tendancy to incorporate the customs and holidays of the cultures it absorbed. As I understand it, Pagan cultures (and others, I think) celebrated the winter solistice (December 21st), so when Chrisitianity came along, it absorbed those holidays. As far as I know, there's no actual link between December 25th and the birth of Christ. So the holiday is really just a cultural celebration of the solstice that long predates Christianity.
Not that I'm knocking anyone who actually celebrates the birth of Christ on that particular day. It's just as far as I understand it, nobody thinks Christ was born on December 25th.

no one knows when Jesus was born, so they picked a day to celebrate it. kwanzaa didn't start being celebrated until the 1960s, and was an excuse for black people who aren't christians to get presents in late december, and the stores want to sell more so they advertise stuff for it just like christmas and hanukkah (sp?). lots of athiests (not the ones who are stickly athiest, but those that don't care) celebrate christmas to get gifts, kwanzaa was just a way to justify that.

YAY IM A RACIST! well anyway, i think it is a dumb thing, and i wont hate people for doing it, but it is dumb. ME is right, it just showed up in the 60s, so dont act like it is something they brought over from their culture or something. Hunnachueaaahhhh (or whatever) wasnt that big, then the Jews wanted something to do during christmas time, but it is actually a religious thing, and was THERE before, just not as big of a deal

christmas and hanukkah are both real holidays, but not since the age of Consumerism were they big gift holidays. Now stores explooit them for gifts so they can sell more, and athiests and people too lazy to go to Church celebrate them for the gifts. Kwanzaa was made to justify that, though most people just say they celebrate Christmas it but celebrate it for Santa and not Jesus.

Read the description Duff found. It says it was founded in 1966, and only 18 million people celebrate it, which isn't that many. Most that celebrate it don't celebrate Christmas, although you are techinically allowed to celebrate both.

Chanukah is a half-assed holiday, not at all religious or important in any way. The only reason people even talk about it is that it's a way to keep Jewish kids from feeling bad when all their Christian friends get lots of kickass presents and the Jewish kid gets a sweater from Uncle Schmoikel.

it is based on the victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks who put and idol in the temple, and the Jews revolted and were victorious. Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are much more significant religiously, but Hannukah is a real holiday, though it has been commercialized cause it is around the same time as christmas and stoers want to sell to jewish people too.

Actually, it's not about that at all. That's the story of Chanukah that you tell the kids, but the true story is that it was a minor civil war between Jews who wanted to assimilate into Greek society, and those who wanted to preserve their traditions. It's a pretty ugly chapter in Jewish history that has gotten transformed into pseudo-Christmas due to its position on the Jewish calendar.

so wut if kwanzaa has only been around since 1966. if next year the government dedicates september 11 as a memorial holiday would u say that it is a fake holiday since it has only been in existence since 2004. probably not. all holidays have been comercialized by the retail companies. now easter is about easter eggs and the easter bunny instead of christ's ressurection. halloween wuz a superstitious holiday where ppl believed that evil spirits came out and played tricks on the living. now it is about costumes and candy. i see now y tyson doesnt want political and religious discussions on these boards. all that comes out of them is ppl arguing with eachother when some1 tells them that their core beliefs r wrong. ME thinks that kwanzaa is some holiday so that african americans can feel important and for some reason he thinks that bcuz he said that that he is rite.

the story of hannukah is in the Book of Maccabees (there might be 2 books of maccabees) in the Bible, and the war was minor one condsidering the jews were not that powerful then and the greek empire they fought (seleucid i think) was on the decline anywaysit was somewhat important but not nearly the most important holiday of the jewish religion. yse it did take on a lot more importance cause it is close to christmas and most people who don't know much about judaism think it is the most important holiday when its really a distant 3rd behind Rosh Shanana (sp?) and Yom Kippur.

nothing major happened in 1966 to justify adding a new holiday for african-americans around christmas like september 11th happened in 2001 so f course we will have some kind of remembrance after it. kwanzaa is a totally artificial holiday made up by black panther types who didn't want to believe in christianity (including not celebrating christmas at all) but still want to get gifts at the same time.

Oh, and it's not 3rd. Yom Kippur is the most important (and Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are basically blended into one long holiday, but Yom Kippur is the important date), and Passover is also extremely important. Chanukah comes somewhere after those three, Shabbat, Sukkot, Purim, and Shavuot.

oh yes, i forgot passover. purim and ones like that are about equal to hannukah The Book of Maccabees is in my Bible, I have a Catholic one, its one that not included in the King James version used by most Protestants.

Personally, I like Christmas, and for me it has nothing to do with religion (or gifts, really). To me, it's a chance to get people together and celebrate family and human kindness (what little of it there is). If for one day we can pretend that we can stand each other, that's a good thing--religious or not.

But hey, we're talking about holidays here. They don't mean that much. Their just elements of culture. It seems to me that if you want to be a good Christian/Jew/whatever, there are a lot of things you have to get right before you start worrying about holidays.Personally, I like Christmas, and for me it has nothing to do with religion (or gifts, really). To me, it's a chance to get people together and celebrate family and human kindness (what little of it there is).
