gibson, by all accounts was incredible. his longest hit was supposedly over 800 ft. that's over 300 feet past that boomer that sosa hit in wrigley the other day. i guess he was an amazing catcher too. Berra i never saw either, but i know he was tough.

bench was my favorite player when i was a kid. i saw him play quite a few times, both at crosley and at riverfront. he's the best i ever saw. when he was young he didn't even come out of his squat to throw to second. he could throw like 250 feet on a rope out of that squat. most guys can't even throw to second without at least dropping to their knees. he was tough when the play was at home as well. as a hitter he wasn't outstanding, but a damn good one. he liked to stretch out and nail outside pitches when pitchers were being shy.

of course, these things are kinda silly anyway. who's to say who the best ever at anything was. it's always good to recognize the great ones though.

I remember Berra being a great bad-ball hitter. If I'm correct, he was MVP three times: '51, '54 and '55. I am sure about '54 and '55 anyway.

Then you had Campanella, who is my favorite. He practicaly mirrored Berra in the MVP Department winning in '51, 53 and '55.

Gary Carter, Carlton Fisk comes to mind as a great backstop.

I only wish I could have seen Gibson play.

gibson sounds by far the best catcher and mayb the best period. that is assuming that the stats saying that he hit 700-900 homers and that he once hit a ball 800 feet are true. too bad no1 here saw him play.

Gibson over Bench, both were phenomenal from what I gather (never saw either play).

First of all, I very much doubt Josh Gibson ever hit a ball 800 feet. Stories like that tend to get embellished over time, and those who would like to preserve the memory of him being a great hitter are likely to add to his legend by making up fanciful numbers. Measuring home runs is an inexact science anyway, and the chance that a person hit the ball 60% further than anyone else is really capable of is pretty slim. Second, numbers for Negro League players are extremely unreliable. One has to keep in mind that Negro Leagues didn't exactly play like the Majors of the same era, they played more like the Majors of the 1870's. Teams might play 60, or 100, or 15 league games depending on their situation. Teams played tons of exhibition games, and they would go around the country barnstorming, and players could, if they wanted to, play baseball every single day throughout the year, with teams often traveling into Central and South America. So take that 700-900 home runs with a grain of salt, a silo full of salt. It doesn't really mean much other than "Josh Gibson hit a lot of home runs, probably more than anyone else who played against him".

no the problem is that i dont ever see them anymore because they arent in my classes. my main friends stay constant, and then my "secondary" friends change depending on who is in my classes. i still talk to 2 or 3 of the asians, but not very much since i never see them.
