I should have never made it a poll to begin with!
There are so many musicals to choose from that the ten choices available to me are pitifully meager. No disrespect to the musicals left out. Damn Yankees definitely should have been in the options...
I never saw Guys and Dolls, at least the movie version, Marlon Brando has a singing role in that?!:o

I had no idea...
I can only imagine.

I think the funniest non-singing actor i've ever seen in a movie, which wasn't a musical, was the Dead Pool.
Anyone remember that pile of plop?
Jim Carrey had a bit role at the beginning before he was anyone. He played a drugged out super famous rocker who gets rubbed out early in the flick. Funnnier still, the music used for his character was early Guns n' Roses, before they were famous.
Looking back, its hilarious to see Jim Carrey acting like he's singing Welcome to the Jungle. Classic....

Tough call between Rent and Rocky Horror Show.... I've performed in the Rocky Horror Show (Phantom) and in a Rocky Horror Picture Show cast (Eddie/Dr. Scott)... incriminating info at http://eroticnightmares.rhps.org ...

The opposite of war isn't peace... it's creation.

Rocky Horror is a fun one to see.
I went to a show once and had a blast.
Someone bought me for a couple of cigarettes, I was honored.:)

Never saw Rent though, just put it on the poll because it's so well known and loved. It was playing in Peoria a couple of months back, yet I didn't have the chance to go.
Hopefully HBO will decide to do a film of Rent next. They do own the rights!

I honestly don't think Rent would work as a film, since it's more of an opera than a musical.

um... i never saw rocky horror picture thingy, and i probably never will, but id like to say that the people who have a cult following of that movie are REALLY strange, there are 3 or 4 of them, and they watch it something like every weekend, and talk about the movie and stuff.

Favorite Musical?
Wow, that is a tough one.
I love them all.

I like:
Fiddler on the Roof for it's storyline.
Le miz has some excellent theatre staging (but the book IS better).
Phantom of the Opera has too much hype.
Cats has the best choreography.
Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat is FUN.
West Side Story has the best music.
Miss saigon was the most exciting.

Overall, my vote goes to ................

Into the Woods.

To me, a musical is where to songs are used to move the storyline forward, not just a soundtrack to go along with it.

Rocky Horror is in a class by itself:lol:

The thing about the Rocky Horror Picture Show is that it isn't all that good. It's just weird...and it's true that the people who are into it are seriously weird...maybe not all of them, but I've known a couple. But I guess cult flicks are like that. As a movie, I'm not sure how good Easy Rider was--it had a cult following. Same for Dr. Strangeglove...a flick my dad went nuts over and that I (but for a couple jokes) didn't get at all.

Anybody ever seen Broken Arrow, with Jimmy Stewart (not a musical)? I got stuck watching it at my grandmother's last weekend. What a horrifyingly bad movie THAT is. It's not even good enough to HAVE a cult following.

I don't get the rocky horror phenomenon myself. I had to go once to experience it myself, but it wasn't good enough to do twice.
Into the Woods is a good one. Thats the one with Milky White the cow, right?
I love that, how they drag that cow around everywhere, it just strikes me as rather funny.:)

As far as Rent, I think it would be cool if they would just put an actual stage performance on tape, like one I saw for Sweeney Todd, it was excellently done, and they are both similar in a lot of respects.

I saw Les Miserables on Broadway in '89 and again in Atlanta (Fox Theater) in the 90s - absolutely fantastic musical.

I want to see Les Miz, figure it gets more runs than an incontinent tourist in Mexico, so i'll get my chance one day.
It gets staged so often, i'll probably be walking down the street and happen upon one, so i'll just wait.

Hair! Hair is the only musical I have ever liked. It's actually a good movie, I've watched it multiple times. Hippy Haters would probably hate it though...

How can anyone hate hippies?
They're so cute! With their addled minds and tie-dyed shirts, awwwww!
Maybe a little stinky though...

There's a musical out there for everyone, you just have to find it!

I forgot about Hair.
It was very progressive in its' time. Great show. Simple staging, but great music.

The movie leaves a lot to be desired, though.

Never saw Hair, but from the way people talk about it, maybe it should be on a poll asking what the worst musical of all time was...
With Tommy and Cats, and Moulon Rouge, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I hated all of those!
 Though I only heard Cats on CD...
Anyone else?

The great thing about Cats is it's based on a book by T.S. Elliot called Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.
The lyrics are almost word for word. It makes it very difficult to read the book without singing it in your head.

Actually, watching the 'cats' who are not in the spotlight during the show is fascinating. It is hard to tell thy're not cats!

The worst musical I've seen?
Got to think about that.

Moulon Rouge is my least favorite one, it just gave me a headache. When they started singing 'smells like teen spirit' I just couldn't stop giggling, but it was angry giggling!

The Blues Brothers. (<--- Period!)

a movie with music in it is NOT a musical. blues brothers is great, in fact i saw it again yesterday on comedy central (yeah, all 10 minutes they didnt cut), but it is not a musical.
sycophantman

December 30, 2003 at 02:02AM View BBCode

It's not a musical in the truest sense, the Blues Brothers I mean.
A musical uses songs to move the plot forward, while the Blues Brothers had songs so they could say 'Hey!, we got Aretha Franklin!!'
Great movie, though.
I love it when they're going through the mall, and they deadpan about the mall having everything, that cracks me up.:D
