The "Washington Nationals" is basically the "Redskins" equivalent, but for americans rather than american indians. Or maybe yankees for northern americans? mets for people living inside of cities? Giants for people above 6' tall? (all terms that reference specific people must be inherently racist/regionalist/etc. Thus they all must be changed.)

I won't say that's the dumbest thing you've ever said, but it's in the neighborhood.

happy, "Redskins" is a totally racist word. you might be the only person in the world that thinks it isn't.

You believe that the word "redskins" has negative feelings towards certain races?

(its not about the semantics, it's about the complete disregard for context.)

context?

context?

you mean the part where the R has feathers hanging from it, clearly indicating we are talking about Native Amercians, and not peanuts?

The person who's suggesting that "Giants" is offensive to tall people just like "Redskins" is offensive to Native Americans is going to lecture other people about context? Sometimes I wonder whether you're this obtuse in general, or if it's mostly just an act.

He was being a semantics moron. (Also he doesn't believe "redskins" is a racial epithet, so there's that.)

wait until he tells us that 'padres' is offensive to catholic monks, 'red wings' to menstruating women and 'cavaliers' to the calvary of charles I.

the context is the fact that it is a professional football team. In the same way that a professional football team wouldnt name their team "The Washington Small Penis Squad", I dont think they would name them Redskins unless they had some sort of positive view of "Redskins".

Fighting Irish never gets this kind of grief. Hell, the irish like them. If I were an american indian, I would unquestionably be a redskins fan.

is this an ogl thread? can i call you an idiot and not get a warning? no? i won't then. that is, however, a statement that an idiot would be ashamed to own.

you know, i almost put 'fighting irish' in there, but then i thought, "no, even happy can't possibly confuse the actual word for a denizen of a country with a racial slur on that country." more fool me, i guess.

(do we really have to explain why they're called the 'fighting irish' and not the 'stinking micks'?)

"drunken, lazy, worthless micks" would be far better better. probably would not fit on the jersey though. also, they can't even play football. only the negroes play well.
happy

clearly the name implies that all irish people fight. And the symbol enhances irish steritypes and makes people think that irish people are leprechauns who fight like really old boxers. Because context is for suckers.

no, you know what, i give in. You guys are right. Every single time I hear the word "redskins", I become a little more racist, it even makes me want to go pillage a local indian casino. I am of the belief that all american indians wear feathers in their hair, and carry spears 24/7 (except when carrying a bow and arrow or a tomahawk). This team name thing is important stuff that really changes things and makes the world a worse place. After this realization, I dont know that I can enjoy my local football team anymore without them changing the team name to an insufferably boring team name so as to destroy the entire team's history and piss off all their paying fans just like the bullets did.
