Dogshit or no, they still limited Cincy to one score, and that was only after the Broncos had kept Cincy at 0 for the first 59:22.

That being said, I can't argue that the Bears have had better competition than the Broncos at this point in the season; the NFC North is a better all around division than the AFC West and the Steelers are the defending SB champs.

(I don't like McDaniels, but I do like trash talk.)

I'd be willing to take that bet on the Skins.

I'm still not a fan of McDaniels, but I cannot argue with his success.

ETA: Of course, it could be [url=http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/10/12/SPBG1A49S5.DTL]worse[/url].

ugh... i guess this knee injury really does have a long term effect, even on tom brady.. hes been missing touchdown chances left and right, wide open receivers, i just hope they can turn it around, they should, they still have a lot left, gonna continue winning for years, just surprising right now

meh, not once that defense is fully rebuilt in a year or two, why you think they traded seymour for a top 5 pick?

I don't know if it'll be this year or next year or a few years from now but the Pats have a 6-win season in their future.

I was liking what McDaniels was doing in the offseason, but even I didn't think we'd be here talking about the Broncos (UGH! those throwbacks are hideous) being 5-0.

I still have my concerns...but the fast start is better than expected. The Broncos 5-0 record appears somewhat thin (although that can probably be said about some of the other undefeated teams right now).

Week One - Amazingly flukish victory
Week's Two and Three - Easy victories over horribly bad teams
Week Four - Exceptional game winning play made by the receiver McDaniels almost alienated out of Denver
Week Five - On plays when he was not under any significant pressure, Tom Brady flat-out missed on a couple of easy throws that cost his team two touchdowns

I know every team that has had an excellent season has had those "fortunate" moments...but I still don't have the feeling that these Broncos match up well against the league's better teams.

Am I being less than fair with poor Josh...probably, as, whatever the circumstances, he is a first year coach who has gotten his team off to a 5-0 start. I think the key has been Mike Nolan, who was an excellent hire, because the Broncos ability to make halftime adjustments on defense has been phenomenal.

Regarding their outlook, of the remaining games, three look very winnable, though the division rivalry thing could trip them up (one at KC, then both OAK and KC at home).

One looks fairly winnable, though it is on the road (at WSH)

Everything else is pretty tough (two games vs SD, home games vs PIT and NYG...and road games vs BAL, IND and PHI). They have a reasonable shot at going 11-5 or better, but finishing 9-7 or 8-8 is not hard to imagine either.

ETA: Lest we forget, Denver was 4-1 after five weeks last season.

I think we can safely assume, at this point, that we are within the peak of the Broncos season. All this media attention has to be the precursor to a drop of some sort. Far too many stories about the Broncos take great pains to explain how mysterious and out-of-the-blue their success is. Peter King on SI.com makes it plain that he doesn't understand their success at all, but he is impressed. No one can explain it because they are looking for definitive answers, and the only answer that seems to have any merit is that they are a fluke.

I would not be terribly surprised if they went 1-4 over the next five games.

what is it with the broncos fans? first we've got a crazy guy suggesting that mike shanahan's success was because of gary kubiak and now we've got an otherwise rational individual suggesting that the 5-0 record under new head coach mcdaniels is because of mike nolan. is it possible for any coach in denver to get any credit at all when something, however inexpliciably, goes right?

Certainly, the defense looks vastly improved, that is no illusion, and you can point to a lot of things for it. Brian Dawkins would be the biggest point of interest for me. Either way, let's not get carried away, they are a nice story, but it probably won't amount to much at the end of the season.
thatrogue

And here I thought I was being rational...

October 15, 2009 at 02:27PM View BBCode

Yeah Deke...this defense is vastly improved over last season while the offense (that for which McDaniels is known) has looked fairly pedestrian. I don't know any NFL analyst that thought McDaniels skill set lent itself to architecting a successful transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4.

he did hire nolan in the first place, didn't he? or at the least seems to allow him the leeway to do his job without interference? are these not good, solid head coaching decisions? i mean i don't think they're for real at this point either, necessarily. but at 5-0 one would think that the head coach would deserve some credit, would one not?

Clearly you have missed the title of this thread and my hidden less than subtle agenda.

(But yes, McDaniels deserves his fair share of the credit.)

Denver has the #6 ranked offensive in terms of yardage (376 ypg)
Denver has the #22 ranked offense in terms of scoring (19.8 ppg)
Denver has the #13 ranked offense using the Aikman Efficiency rating system (81.1)

Denver has the #2 ranked defense in terms of yardage given up (252 ypg)
Denver has the #1 ranked defense in terms of points given up (8.6 ppg)
Denver is tied for the #1 ranked defense with New Orleans using the Aikman Efficiency rating system (94)

Plain and simple, Denver has a decent team.

BTW, The AERs consider 75 to be a team performing at the 10 year average for the NFL. Anything over 90 is exceptional for the season. I consider them to be a much better indicator of how good a team is. IMO, the AER is the Sabermetrics of the NFL.

It's great that Denver has a decent team, because its been ever so long since we've seen a 9-7 team in the NFL. It'll be like a unicorn sighting.

That's rather decent of you to point out, Aaron.

Khazim, regarding Denver's offense, 19.8 ppg/22nd in the league is quite pedestrian, is it not? Or were you trying to refute something else?

think of it this way... jerry jones could be your owner.

then you'd have the right to gripe.

Yeah, because those 3 Super Bowls that the Cowboys won while he was the owner of the club definitely didn't happen.
