The Book of Macabees isn't in the Bible.

The Book of Maccabees is in my Bible, I have a Catholic one, its one that not included in the King James version used by most Protestants.

The books of Maccabees are considered "Apocrypha" and were only accepted by a few of the early church fathers as authentic. They were never accepted by any Jewish authorities as "inspired" and therefore never added to the Jewish canon... yet somehow at the Council of Trent they were added to the canon. In a nutshell, what happened was during debates with Martin Luther Roman Catholics quoted Maccabees in suport of prayer for the dead. Luther and Protestants following him challenged the canonicity of that book, citing the New Testament, early church Fathers, and Jewish teachers for support. The Council of Trent responded by canonizing most of Apocrypha. It is particularly suspicious because one of the rejected books (2 Esdras) contains a verse strongly against praying for the dead. Even some Catholi "higher-ups" did not approve of this instant canonization, but I will leave the rest of this up to you...

I got my username from a verse in the Bible, Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD , "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. "

kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated by african americans honoring their african roots and culture as well as family. it is NOT just away for them to get gifts and not have to celebrate christmas. the gifts r hand made and there is a lot of celebration with families. it is not a comercial thing that stores use to make more money.

if a september 11th holiday became a holiday for people who dont have any religions to buy presents for each other, then i would say that was dumb too. Kwanzaa is dumb. Skier thinks everything is good if it is for blacks or something, he is like the opposite of a racist, like a reverse racist, except he doesnt love blacks, hate whites, he just is all scary about loving black tradition or something, and if anyone else says it is dumb, then they are racist, i dont know if i can totally explain what he is doing by saying all this dumb stuff. whatever.

happy do u kno anything about kwanzaa? i do. they teach it to us all the way thru middle school as part of a tolerance program. u seem to b saying that if u dont agree with my way then u r wrong. u make up stats that u sware r rite but then wont look them up to back up wut u r saying. im not saying that u have to agree with someone elses beliefs but u should respect them. mayb ppl who celebrate kwanzaa think that christians made up a story about a guy who saved the world that wuz born on december 25 2003 years ago so that they could buy gifts for eachother. see it goes both ways. y dont u say i dont agree with the concepts of kwanzaa but i respect the ppl who celebrate it. or say i dont kno anything about kwanzaa so i cant make judgments about it cuz i would just b guessing. i think that the second is true in ur case happy.

9/11 should not be a holiday. Holidays you celebrate/commemerate. Nothing to celebrate about 9/11.

Yeah, but there's something to commemorate. It's the same thing with Memorial Day. Not every holiday has to be fireworks, beer and/or football. Sometimes it's okay for people to memorialize something that happened by just reflecting.

no, no holiday for september 11th. the government will screw it up. Anyone remember Lee/Jackson/Martin Luthur (i really hoped i spelled luthur right...) King Jr day? that was genious by the government, of course if you watch gods and generals you will think that the south was fighting to free the slaves in the north.

True Giorge, but now, some kids just thing memorial day and say "Schools off!" They fail to realize WHY school is off. It's bad.

A long time ago there were some guys who didn't have a penny to their name and didn't have much, if any, education. One day a really cool and together cat arrived on the scene and called these regular guys to follow him and forget their previous lives. He called them "fishers of men" and also "disciples". This is where my username calls from.

If nuclear holocaust happens tomorrow, and the surviving people all get turned into zombies like in the Omega Man, and then the zombies band together and form a new society with schools and hospitals, and turn September 27 into a day of remembrance of the holocaust where all the zombie children get out of school, then those zombie children won't reflect on the events of Sept. 27, they'll say, yay, we're out of school, braaaaaaiiiiiinnnnsssss.

Which is all a way of saying, of course most children don't realize the true significance of a holiday. That isn't a reason to not have holidays for significant events, and 9/11 was pretty significant. And keep in mind that most children never lived through a real war, so don't really understand what Memorial day means, but I would bet most children know quite a bit about what happened on 9/11. Even zombie children.

My nickname is what my friends actually call me--Whiskybear, with the foolishness to consume 15 shots of whisky in about 3 hours, and the strength to push his hand, palm open, through a double-paned weather window, not because he was angry, but because he was trying to open it.

hobos is technically a mistake. My name should be kingofthehobos but I started using hobos and I didn't want to destroy my post count, without my post count I'd be a poor begging rookie like playa:(

Back to the Off Topic topic of this topic, which is in off topic. Kwanzaa isn't a holiday. Don't believe me? Then ask 95% of African Americans. If I went to South Central in December, I guaruntee you that no one is celebrating it

Wow, what an old thread. This was from back in the bad old days, when happy was super-annoying.

Duff, as I'm sure I stated earlier in this thread, is a name I've used since high school. It sprang from my short-lived affinty for Guns n' Roses bassist Duff McKagan. It has nothing to do with Duff Beer or The Simpsons.

If you want to read a really annoying old thread, go and read Hollywood. Thats great stuff.
