Oh, Tevez is eminently hateable -- he flops around the field, plays dirty, and is just unbelievably ugly.

The yellow on Muller today was deplorable, and it knocks him out of the prospective showdown with Spain -- which is good for Spain's chances, I suppose, but not so much for the fun. I also need to point out that after looking at an outside chance at an all-South America semifinal, only a deliberate handball in the 120th minute separates us from the exact opposite. I'm kind of writing off Paraguay there, but so be it.

Does he? He works his ass off and is generally pretty strong on the ball. I guess he was sort of a dick for a little while in the first half, which is probably what set you guys off, but for the most part he isn't too bad. I mean, he is no Robben, at least.

Anyhow, Germany played really good. Can't say I am at all surprised by the result.

He is no Robben, no Ronaldo, and certainly no Italian national team, but he embellishes on challenges. Maybe not more than anyone else, even, but he is just so godforsaken ugly, drew. And he seems to get away with some things because (as you note, and to his credit) he busts his ass.

I remember being disgusted with him in the games against Nigeria and Mexico. I more or less slept through the game against South Korea, and paid more attention to Nigeria-South Korea than Argentina-Greece. But the three times I watched Argentina intently, I came away hating his guts.

well. germany is nothing to celebrate, but at least they did beat argentina. the holocaust has been partially offset.

Germany were extremely organized and Argentina were ridiculously discombobulated (DISCOMBOBULATED), which would have been what you'd have expected from this match-up until pretty recently. Argentina had shown some signs of progress in this tournament (and even in the run up), but the first genuinely good team they faced undid them relatively easily.

I don't know if the South American results so far are too surprising, people just like to overreact to that sort of thing. All five were favorites to go through from their groups, and the four who won their round of sixteen matches were all favorites as well. There are probably six or seven pretty good teams from CONMEBOL these days, but Brazil were the only one to ever be considered particularly great (in terms of actual performance, obviously).

I watched most of both matches today and really enjoyed them. I'll be hoping for a Germany/Uruguay final, and we will probably get Netherlands/Spain. Oh well, as long as the matches are well played, I don't care.

I've been trying so hard to hate the Germans as usual but it's hard with this team, and that kind of pisses me off even more.

I gave it all of a long weekend, guys, and I still haven't come around on Uruguay. Not that I find it easy to root for the Dutch (or against Forlan).

I'm still sticking with the Spanish. But I'll root for either of the sides from that match over whichever team wins the slave trader/cheater matchup.

what once seemed so promising really went to hell in a handbasket, didn't it?

That's how it always is for those of us who think Brazil can go to hell. Every year you get stuck with whatever Eurotrash team is least offensive.

even for you, the only worst result than a brasil victory would be Holland.

(it couldn't get any worse for the whole world, excluding Holland.)
