Not to mention that Elway was the QB who couldn't get it done without an outstanding RB.

Well he's no Jon Gruden.

(Dammit, Craig, I was going to make the same joke.)

based on the standard apparently in use for this thread, i think it's a toss up between billick (trent dilfer), gruden (brad johnson) and bill parcells (jeff hoestettler). i'll go with parcells i guess. they beat a better team than the other two.

Nah, I'll see your Parcells and raise you a Joe Gibbs. Quarterbacking his three Super Bowl wins were Joe Theismann, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien.

if you have a decent defense (in the case of the redskins, the running game served as the defense, if the other team's offense is on the sidelines watching the clock run, the running game is effectively playing defense) the quarterback's main function is to hand the ball to the running back and otherwise take care of the football (this was a concept norv turner could never grasp. when the redskins lost to tampa bay in the playoffs, turner had johnson throwing right down the middle of the field, into the wind, and the team HAD THE LEAD.

and then the redskins fired tuner later, not after that game. go figure. still, turner is a very fine offensive coach, he had a bad day.

of course, the doug williams thing was a slightly different recipe (in the super bowl anyway). but they did beat buckteethed elway and the broncos. i mean, anybody could beat them.

it's a good point, but i think all 3 of those guys were better than the hoss. theisman was a 3-timer all-pro and offensive player of the year and doug willilams took the gay-pirate bucs to the nfc championship game, which might make him the best qb of all-time. i think gibbs' greatest coaching performance was getting to the championship game with jay shcroeder.

no, rippen was far worse than shcroeder. shcroder was far more stupid, but better.

You're ignoring the fact that Parcells also won a Super Bowl with Phil Simms, a significantly better QB than either Williams or Rypien. And that 3 > 2. The Jay Schroeder thing is really just padding the stats. Joe Gibbs, greatest coach of all-time. I win.

could we compromise on schroeder was far more talented, but much dumber and therefore less effective?

good point with simms, but you're ignoring the doug williams as the best qb of all-time argument. those bucs jerseys were will-sappingly awful, and had to be worth a TD or two against every game.

ah, the NFC championship. the only one of those we count as a championship was when they beat Staubach and the Cowboys.

on a plus note, I really hope the Broncos can score the Giants DC, Spagnuolo. He's the protege of the Eagles DC Jim Johnson and is very good friends with Philly's GM, whose contract is up at the end of the season, IIRC.

as i alluded to before, it was shocking. i mean, when they pounded the danny white cowboys later, that was just natural. but staubach? it was completely crazy.

and yes, '72 (i guess). they lost to the (17-0) dolphins in the Super Bowl, with Kilmer at the helm and Jurgenson on the bench. Allen never did really care much for Sonny.

i always felt sort of bad for danny white, actually. he was really a pretty good quarterback- winning % over .650, 3 straight championship game appearances, i mean how many nfl qb's can say that? but he had two major injuries later in his career when he was playing well, and just couldn't manage to get into the super bowl. but all three championship game losses came on the road, to some pretty good teams, and he was on the wrong end of that catch in the end zone that montana and clark pulled out of their collective asses. (and people forget that after that he drove the cowboys back down and came within a safety tackling drew pearson by the jersey of winning that game anyway.) plus he was following a goddamn legend, so anything less than 5 super bowl appearances was going to be criticized. i mean he wasn't staubauch or aikman or even meredith i guess, but he was a lot closer than anyone else in a dallas jersey and i always thought he sort of deserved better.
