Hey Tyson, how about a "Newbies League"?

July 23, 2003 at 04:28AM View BBCode

Newbies (myself included) have a hard time
estimating the value of players and draft picks
(The team I took over three seasons into the TW league
somehow didn't hold onto initial draft players
who are now A and A- starting pitchers. In a league
where most teams have at most one A- pitcher its
obvious that the previous owner didn't understand
the value of having those two pitchers anchoring
his staff).

So how about a Newbie league where new players
can figure things out sheltered from the sharpies?

Possible rules might be:
1. No one in the league who currently owns more then one other
simdynasty team.
2. Initial draft is set to the defaults and "balanced" so there will
be a reasonable distribution of talent.
3. All trades must be straight up exactly balanced
(23 year old B+ for 23 year old B+). So GMs could trade
to fill weaknesses and change the balance of their teams
from hitting to pitching, but couldn't get
swindled.
4. No trading of draft picks whatsoever - I know
it's fun but crummy teams NEED those picks and its too
easy to trade picks like monopoly money.
5. No waiving any player who is C+ and 18 or younger/better,
until they reach say 32 years old.

anyway, just an idea (and a way to avoid finishing
a really tedious paper due monday...*sigh*)

You could start a custom league and make those the ground rules if you wanted. I don't exactly agree with all of those rules (rule #3 mostly) but it is an interesting idea. :)

He would have a hard time starting such a custom league. Most custom leagues seem to be filled by guys who get addicted such as myslef.

I do agree with most of his points, though, that those of use who have played before are at a real advantage. The draft pick thing is a double edged sword, though. It is usually the good teams sending picks to the bad teams, so that gives the bad teams more picks to rebuild with.

I think it would be reasonable to set up a newbie dynasty league for the next dynasty league season, if tyson could figure out a way to separate the real newbies from those who created a second or third account.

I think most of the new dynasty leagues are nearly 100% newbies. There may be 2-3 guys in the league that have played before though.

If you read the rules and play a season of free ball before you jump into dynasty, there's really no newbie disadvantage.

I traded away a lot of older, more experienced and skillful players in my first season, came second last, but a year later I have a rotation including 4 21yo SP's with ratings of C+, B, B+ and B+, as well as three B+ relievers that are 26yo, 22yo and 19yo.

...Because I read the rules. :P

if there wuz a newbie league experienced guys could just make another account and get in that league. all though its a different s/n its the same person i dont think that a newbie league would work out.
