SD 101- advice for newbies

skipping over the newbie ugliness

There are certain things here that are just facts, they may seem strange but it's just the way it is, this is a game and is not in any way a 100% replica of MLB so you have to put some ideas aside in order to win at this game. Violating these suggestions means only that you WILL hurt your team -these are mistakes virtually every new SDS owner makes and reading this allows you to skip past them

I. The minor league system is idiotic at best but there is very little wiggle room so don't paint outside the lines- the best thing to do is 5-5-5, you can do 4-4-4-3 but that hurts the development of all but the guy with 3. Any other arrangement is suicidal.

II. this is the list of improvement age development

1t. 23
1t. 24
3t. 25
3t. 22
5. 26
6. 21
7. 27
8. under 21
9. 28
10. 29
11. 30
12. 31-33
13. over 33

For pitchers, it ranks slightly differently
1. 24
2t. 23
2t. 25
4t. 26
4t. 22
6t. 27
6t. 21
8. 28
9. under 21
10. 29
11. 30
12. 31-33
13. over 33

III. here is the actual chart of points, the letters are just cyphers, its the numbers that matter, keep track of your guys as much as possible

F: 1-3
D-: 4-11
D: 12-19
D+: 20-27
C-: 28-35
C: 36-43
C+: 44-51
B-: 52-59
B: 60-67
B+: 68-75
A-: 76-83
A: 84-91
A+: 92-100

IV. If a pitcher doesnt have B+ control he will suck horribly unless he has awesome velocity and even velocity won't help if the control is in the green

V don't let anyone tell you differently, speed and D help you win

i took this from the JRL message board and mlb 1083 is the one who wrote it and deserves credit for the very good counciling he provides in the above post.

I will give you some pointers - a lot you can find on the main boards.
- Picks in rounds 2-5 are basically worthless. You may get lucky with a few years of CPs on a young guy, but usually just garbage.
- I like high health guys B and up. You don't have to have as strong as a bench since they play almost every game.
- Value control in pitchers higher than velocity
- Power has more value than contact for hitters.
- Defensive grades are overrated. The key positions for defense are short and second. The rest you can have poor defense guys there and they won't hurt you too bad.
- Get catchers with high arm scores, 1st basemen with higher range, 3rd baseman with higher arm scores.
- Put 5 CPs on your 3 best prospects and don't change. It won't do much to have a 3 or less CP on a minor league guy.
- Starting pitchers are MUCH more valuable than bullpen guys.
- Don't trade a proven younger guy (under 30) for a 1st round pick. 1st round picks can be overrated. A common "rookie" mistake is to trade their good player(s) for a #1. I wouldn't recommend it unless a guy is older.
- keep 15 guys in minors (i see you already did this)
- As a general rule keep hitters under 23 in the minors and pitchers under 22 in minors. This will maximize improvement potential. THIS IS A BIG ONE. A good looking 20 year old can turn to crap in the majors.

Those are a few. I hope these help and feel free to ask and specific questions.

Thanks

Jayme

PS - this is a U2U an owner from the GVHL sent me after i asked for some advice. the owner retired but not before making 12 straight appearances in the playoffs. if you need help ask one of your fellow owners or post it in the Q&A, lots of help is out there, all you need to do is ask.

thanks, i hadnt seen the improvement age development list anywhere yet

my brains about to explode from all the help threads ive been reading the last couple days but now im ready to rock

one last thing, without getting too specific, what are the values of the picks in the amateur draft... i know each draft varies in talent but just like an estimate would help

ie:

1st-5th picks = surefire all stars
5-16th = solid players
2nd round= hit or miss prospects
3rd round + = bums who probably will never amount to more than a bench player

is that about right or way off?

thanks,

brad

phen0m, my advice is to read as much of the message board as possible in the Q&A and FAQ Development threads especially (tho sounds like u'r alrdy doing that). a lot of good info out there. and ask questions! everybodies been great so far in answering questions. and use the "trade advice" feature. u'l find out quickly if a trade offer is a real stinker, and also may get some assist on making better counter offers etc.

my experience has been that 4th and 5th rounders are crap, very rarely will you find someone in the 4th round worth developing. 2nd and 3rd rounders are hit and miss, if the draft pool is deep you can find a good prospect to develop. they can be found in the later rounds simply because owners avert drafting teenage prospects for the simple reason that they don't have or don't want to commit 4-5 years worth of CP's. 1st round you can usually find a player who is ready to help now or a year or two away from helpng your team.
