Baseball Movies

August 19, 2003 at 01:40AM View BBCode

Well, I figured since we had such a diversity in the 'favorite movie' poll, I'd water down the choices to one category.

I'll throw in 'Bull Durham', even though it's the only one on this list I haven't seen, unfortunately enough. Since Costner is prone to making a few baseball movies, I've only included that and 'Field of Dreams'.

I'm aware that some of these are more documentary than actual baseball, and these are strictly, with that one exception, movies that I've seen. Your input is appreciated. :)

Bull Durham, and it's not that close. Unless you actually like Field of Dreams. And if you do like Field of Dreams, I have a bag full of sugar in my pantry that you might want to eat instead: it'll leave you with about the same taste in your mouth. I think what this list really shows is how there are virtually NO good baseball movies other than Bull Durham. Oh, and maybe some people think 61 was good, but I assure you, you just didn't watch it closely enough.

I happen to like sugar, actually. Some would argue that I'm addicted to it... Eat it by the truckload I do.

It's actually an overactive thyroid or something that gives me some extra adrenaline reserves as I live from day to day. :P

Have you seen 'Cobb', George? You probably have and rightfully so given it little credit seeing as that weird guy from 'Arliss' stars as Al Stump... I didn't like him much, either, but it gives a slight bit of insight as to how big an asshole Ty Cobb really was.

I'm actually curious as to who's seen that one, personally, because I hadn't even heard of it until my brother-in-law mentioned something about it a couple weeks back. I saw it and found it credible enough...

Bull Durham gives a humorous look at baseball from the minor league perspective. It also gives you some insight into the mind of a baseball player, young and old. Major League was just a goofy comedy that had baseball in it. Angels in the Outfield was as much a true baseball movies as Major League.

Eight Men Out was a good movie. Dealt with the Black Sox scandal, although many of the people involved said they took quite a bit of artisit license.

The best baseball movie for me isn't on the list. I liked The Natural the best.

Damn it! The Natural... Considering Redford's one of my fave actors, I feel bad for completely forgetting that.

I'll quit drinking one of these days...

Don't feel bad. The Natural is such a melodramatic flick that even though I love baseball flicks, I can't deal with it. Especially that 'gimme a break' ending.

Field of Dreams is much the same way for me, I loved it first time I saw it, but on repeat viewings it's really not much of a movie.

Cobb is a good flick - Tommy Lee Jones does a great Ty Cobb, but it isn't really a story as such, more a look at a prick who could hit. It's definitely interesting, much better than The Babe.

We can't forget the Bad News Bears, can we? That flick's been remade so many times (Mighty Ducks, Hardball) that it must qualify as a classic.

And let's not go without making mention of The Rookie. It may have been Disney to the core, but I ate it up, and I'm a cynical bastard.

And I might wear some abuse for this, but the baseball half of For Love of the Game is awesome stuff. The romantic half is ridiculous and ruins what would have been a great baseball flick, but Sam Raimi really worked wonders with the ball side.

But Bull Durham is the best by a long way. Funny, real, Costner at his best (back when he didn't stink), Sarandon being a fox, awesome stuff.

"You lollygag to first base... you lollygag to second..."

But my advice to you all is to hold your breath for the greatest baseball movie of all time in 2005... if I can just find a way to complete the final ten pages of the script.

I have seen Cobb, a long time ago, and it was pretty good but Robert Wuhl is definitely a problem. Of course, he was in Bull Durham too, but somehow I can overlook him in that movie.

I had totally forgotten about Eight Men Out. That is a quality baseball flick, probably second after Bull Durham, and one of John Sayles' best. John Cusack is great as always, although I'm not sure Buck Weaver was in fact as innocent as the movie (and I presume book) made him out to be. But that's a debate for another topic. Eight Men Out is definitely second on the list.

the natural is not only butchered by it's star (redford) and it's director (those exploding fireworks are disgusting) but also by the only bad performance from robert duvall you'll ever see. an ugly movie indeed.

If you think that's the only bad performance of Robert Duvall's career, you obviously haven't seen The Scarlet Letter.

And let's not even talk about Gone in 60 Seconds... Duval could hand in his union card after that shinola.

I liked For Love of the Game... I liked the fact that the pitcher didn't just take a deep breath and get back dominating stuff, but instead was backed up by a solid defense... too often, baseball movies show teams being carried by individuals, not playing as a team...

That said, I voted for Major League, although I could have just as easily said Bull Durham. I liked the fact that they used real Minor League teams... we even get one of those teams down here in Augusta occasionally, the Asheville Tourists...

I'm suprised there's been no mention of A League Of Their Own...

Anyone remember the Twilight Zone episode with a robot pitcher?

I like just about any movie with baseball in it - even crap like The Scout and Little Big League.

Bingo Long and the Traveling All-Stars is another good one IMO.

Another one not mentioned that I have seen is Mr. Baseball. Tom Seleck goes to Japan to play - somewhat funny, some insights into the Japaneese game in there too.

I liked 61 - I'm not sure about the acting and some of the other stuff, but I liked it because I learned some things about Maris that I didn't already know.

There's a new one coming out next year about Honus Wagner - I think it may be a Disney type one though, a kid finds a Honus Wagner card and finds it has magical powers.

My favorite is probably Field of Dreams.

Yeah, I was trying to leave 'Ed', 'Little Big League', and 'Rookie of the Year' (even though I half liked that movie when i was a kid) out, because I felt like the ones i've listed had a more serious note to their dramatic tune than the rest... of course i could be wrong, and of course i also regret leaving out 'the bad news bears' and 'a league of their own' as has been pointed out. i especially like matthau as a little league coach. that would've been someone i could've gotten along with. lol

Was For the Love of the game with Kevin Costner? The one where he plays a pitcher named Billy Chapel or something? If it is thats a good one, Bull Durham is good, but the Major Leagues are the best. They are funny and a good baseball movie.

Major League is good. Major League 2 is feh. Major League 3 is just awful.

Angles in the Outfield anyone? And thank god nobody's come forward to claim Hardball as a good movie... ugh.
