Message Board

June 28, 2002 at 09:26AM View BBCode

I think that the message board is one of the most important and enjoyable parts of Sim Dynasty. It is amazing how well I think I know members of the Willie Mays and Beta leagues just because of all of the posts here. I wish that everyone would post so that it would feel even more like a community.

That being said, the boards speed can be very frustrating. Sometimes it seems I wait forever for them to open up. I have a high speed cable modem, I can't imagine someone with a dial-up even being able to use them. On the other hand, I use other boards that are faster but more cumbersome and don't allow you to go back and read more than a page of postings. I sure don't have the answer but it may be something you would like to look at.

I know, I know. Its frustrating to me as well. I like the functionality of this board, but the speed sometimes is slow.

I'll see what I can do. This board is a Open Source project from a site called xmbforums.com.

Hopefully, I can make this board faster. Because the functionality is great IMO.

I'll play around with it in the next couple of weeks. I think if I change the settings to show less topics per page, that would make it faster.

It seems to me that the slowest pages in the boards are the Topic links (ie click on Latest News or Report Problems). So if I limit the number of posts that show up on these pages, it would be a lot faster hopefully.

These are, actually, very fast boards in general. When I used them on my site, they were efficient.

But they are slow on your site for some reason. Is this the only PHP/MySQL you use on your site Tyson?

While we're at it, could you upgrade XMB? The change from the version you're using to the next version was great. I haven't used them in a few months, those kids were close to breaking out a newer version with many enhancements.

Thanks

Maybe I should upgrade, have you done it on your site yet BC?

I'm a little worried because I think they have new ownership now, and I didn't know how good the new code would be vs. the old code. And if I'd have to wipe out or change my DB to make the upgrade.

Question for Tyson

June 28, 2002 at 03:35PM View BBCode

I don't know how you feel about microsoft, or the .NET initiative or even what your hosting company host or can host but I have written some very effective discussion boards in .NET for one of the clients I worked for. If you are interested I can send you the code. It currently uses a sql server backend but I can easily write you up some data access layer to point to mysql if you want. Not sure if you can serve up ASP.NET pages though let me know.

I upgraded without issue, but it was several months ago. Since I deal on a much smaller scale than you, I decided to go with amateur homemade boards.

I hadn't checked in on xmb in a while, looks as if many of the same people are participating, but you're right, may not quite be the same.
