Yow! And it only would have been a 4-run inning without the error by Jake Alexander, and the game would have gone to extra innings!

How in the world did the starting pitcher survive that inning?

Yeesh. 16 runs for that pitcher, but only 9 earned...

The Orioles played a game in Texas several years ago with an inning that looked a lot like that. It ended with Manny Alexander (an infielder) giving up a grand slam to Kevin Elster. But then even Manny didn't give up the SECOND blast. :)

TYSON ALERT! Why didn't ABE yank this pitcher? Okay, there were three errors, but the dude still gave up all sixteen runs. I know he got yanked on the hammered rule in the fourth, but any manager would've pulled him in the third--at least after he gave up the slam.

And didn't Cincy once give up 16 unearned runs in a game? Anybody know that record?

By the way, I think ABE has it wrong. As far as I know, any run that scores after there should have been three outs is unearned. It's computed by reconstructing the inning without the errors.

Here's the inning without the errors:

Pat Snyder (made 1st out instead of reaching on an error--1 out). Jimmie Ogrodowski lays down a bunt. He is thrown out at first (doesn't matter that he wouldn't have bunted--out #2). Runners advance. Wild pitch, all runners advance a base. Andrew Dewitt singles. Pat Snyder scores (unearned run). Andrew Dewitt steals second. Adam Metzger walks. Sean Neon singles. Andrew Dewitt scores (earned). Curt Metz singles. Adam Metzger scores (earned). Matt Rossi grounds into a force play to the shortstop (3rd out).

All the runs scored after that should have been unearned, because if you reconstruct the inning without the errors, no one should've batted after Rossi. So I count 2 earned runs. The pitcher was charged with 9.

Feel free to correct me if I have this wrong, but this is how I've always understood the rule.

ABE has difficulty calculating unearned runs. It's a known bug, but Tyson says it is a real pain to program. Since it doesn't really impact gameplay and is so difficult to fix, it's low on the list to be fixed. Some day, though.

I know, but I just wanted to see if I was right. It stinks in a game like that, where a guy is charged with seven runs he shouldn't have been. But oh well, Tyson has more important things to do :)
