Knights go to 4-man bullpen

November 10, 2003 at 11:54PM View BBCode

With the retirement of reliable middle reliever Larry Cruz, the World Champion New York Knights have been left with a hole in their vaunted pitching staff.

With no viable replacement available in the team's minor leage system, and little trade-bait left after last season's chamionship run, the Knights management have opted to experiment with a four-man bullpen.

Though erratic journey man Charles Hudson will travel with the team as a contingency option, the coaching staff has been instructed not to pitch Hudson unless absolutely necessary.

Through 20 games Hudson has not thrown a single pitch in the Beta League this season. Whether he ever does -- and whether this stragtegy takes its toll on the rest of the Knight's pitching staff -- will be one of the stories to watch this season.

With starter Miguel Mullin out with an injury for about a month, the Knights have moved long reliever Bob Everett into the starting rotation and are now employing a 3 man bullpen. Two thirds through the month, the Knights are still thriving despite the arrangement.

Of course, their success in using a short bullpen can probably be attributed to the effectiveness and endurance of their starters (Starting five all have A+ endurance and B+ or better overall ratings).
