The domiNATEors 1952 edition...

November 14, 2003 at 11:51PM View BBCode

Although it is to early to judge the draft it is not to early to express disapointment in the development of some of philadelphia's youngsters.
although disapointed the lineup looks like it will be coming back in tact. it seems like certain phillies have reached their ceiling. particularly mitch williams and kevin millwood. both had shown amazing potential at times, but simply could not maintain consistency. with few other options millwood will remain in the starting rotation, but williams will start the season in the bull pen, and the domiNATEors make no secret that there is no room for him in the minors so his next stop will be the unemployment line.
Millwood could still develop into a solid starter, but the domiNATEors are done
thinking that he could be part of the long term championship machine the domiNATEors are working towards. None of the other pitchers stepped up, and took control of the opportunity to learn at the major league level, but being younger than millwood they are still highly regarded. particularly schilling. though now at 22 he is no longer the phenom we thought. he is simply a mega talented but struggling prospect.
offensively the domiNATEors will probably be better although the learning curve has not been as steep as the domiNATEors had been hoping. particularly jordan, chamberlain, and bowa proved to be disapointments. chamberlain, and bowa had both lost there jobs by the end of the season, and that is on a rebuiliding team. so they both fell pretty far from grace. bowa will remain in the minors unless mauerer gets hurt, but as a result of recent organizational meetings the domiNATEors have decided that chamberlain will be there every day rf once again. defensively he is the kind of gem that comes along once in a while. he is fabled to be able to through a strike to home from the cf wall. the domiNATEors have some good young of prospects in the minors, but feel an arm like that should be on display. lets see how long that is valued on a bad team. if the pitching staff is still walking everyone next year it wont matter how far he can throw it.
the rest of the lineup have higher expectations, and hopefully it clicks next year. particularly for schmidt who is a four tool player, he swings at everything, but he just hasnt produced to his talent level yet.
another suprising move is that padilla will open the season in the minors, and the domiNATEors are planning on leaving him there. many people within the organization believe he will be there for several years. the younger pithcers will remain in the minors at all costs. things arent looking great in philadelphia, but on the bright side it couldnt possibly be as bad as 1951.

Draft recap...

The domiNATEors had the number one draft pick in 1952, and thought the talent pool may not have been to deep it is clear that the domiNATEors got their hands on the type of arm that organizations covet year after year. Curt Schilling looke great in his debut, and looks to only get better. a fastball that is consistently in the mid 90s, and great control is just the start of the tools schilling brings to the domiNATEors. he has a big curveball that he throws for stikes. the domiNATEors believe that he can develop another pitch to add to his arsenal. probably something that changes speeds because right now everything is hard.
Schilling spent his college career at the baseball powerhouse in New Paltz, NY.
The domiNATEors number three pick was his team mate there. Dave Bailor has the kind of leadership that combined with Curt led the Hawks to three staight national championships. Bailor is not particularly fast, but he can flat out hit. his rights belonged to the Washington Nationals as a result of the trade that brought the incumbanet cf to philadelphia.
the domiNATEors are sad to say good by to mike schmidt and roxey chappas, but jay fitzpatrick returns to the domiNATEors, the team he helped lead to an appearnace in the 1950 ws, and bailor looks to be the kind of centerpiece the domiNATEors can build an outfield around. he joins kruk, and chamberlain. schmidt's departure makes a spot for young defensive wiz travis chapman to play 3rd. hopefully he isnt to overmatched by major league pitching. he is still very young, but the domiNATEors believe he is a diamond in the rough. chapman, and chamberlain are both highly regarded by the domiNATEors organization though neither currently strikes any fear into apposing pitchers.
the second round draft pick is a promising teenage hurler steve beecher. he joins several other promising young pitchers in the domiNATEors minor league who will be given every opportunity to develop at their own pace.
to sum up the domiNATEors draft i would have to call it a success, but many would probably accuse me of short changing them.

Tom See

November 23, 2003 at 03:28AM View BBCode

The Phillies have made another trade. an organization that has never been content with resting on their laurels has made another trade. this time with the milwaukee highlanders. Philadelphia gave up their second best pitcher in Jay Fitzpatrick for Tom See. See is a CF by trade, but the domiNATEors are planning on playing him in lf. with bailor playing in rf all three of positions are being played by cf.
Though all three are average defensively they should combine to provide the domiNATEors with some of the best outfield defense in the jwl. of course the trade has moved chamberlain to the minors, and the bailor has a very good arm, it may even be considered a cannon; but chamberlains is a howitzer.
offensively though chamberlain would have been best served spending last season in the ml. the domiNATEors still are expecting big things from him, and could face some tough decisions when he is finally ready. they have two talented rf in the minors now. they also have a very talented lf in the minors, jim eisenrich. as talented as he is he will not be with the big club for a while because when chapman is ready kruk will be moved to lf.
the problems that the domiNATEors face now are pleasant ones because they have to much talent. probably some of these of will have to be traded. particularly eisenrich. a fast future leadoff hitter he could probably be an effective player in the big leagues now, but he is not as fast as see, and therefore will proabably be traded. See is one of the fastest players in the game, and he will be in the leadoff spot at least until his power develops. some withing the domiNATEors organization believe he could be a 30 30 type of player in the next few years. just one more piece in the kog towards domiNATeors domiNATEion.

Red Abbott...

November 24, 2003 at 01:50AM View BBCode

The one armed wonder who has bounced around from prospect to suspect the last few years looks like he may have turned the corner towards ace status that the domiNATEors expected from him. Abott is one of only a few remaining players from the world series appearance in 1950.
at the young age of 20 red had showed the management in philadelphia enough to be considered the corner stone of a rotation that would be expected to make a return to the world series. with the addition of curt schilling through this years draft, and the sheer mass of quality arms in the rotation it looks like a solid foundation was in place. though the domiNATEors are not close to contending in 1952 abbott and schilling will both still be young in 1954 when the domiNATEors are moving into a new ballpark. another succesful draft in 1953, and 1954 should see the domiNATEors as a force to be reckoned with for the second half of the decade. a young offense that seems to improve every day combined with abbott and schilling's talent could almost be enough, but a few more decent drafts, and the continued development of the young arms that are currnetly in the rotation, and down on the farm show that the domiNATEors are an organization on the upswing, and the rest of the jwl better beware.

as another disapointing season...

winds down in philadelphia the optimism of domiNATEor fans remains undaunted. the domiNATEors look like they have at least a couple members for a future championship caliber pitching staff, and with three first round picks in the upcoming draft the rest of that rotation could be either currently on the roster or on its way soon enough.
once again the domiNATEors have the first overall pick, and if they could get the shadow of their last number one they should be happy. unfortunately one of those number ones cost the domiNATEors one of their best offensive players in daulton, but hoak has been their best offensive player and played a solid catcher all season. the domiNATEors are also optimistic about their offense as they have 4 of the top 5 rookies in the league. including the number one rookie tom see who could be the best lead off hitter in the game if he continues to improve. those 4 top rookies dont even include schilling who was a top 2 or 3 in ks all season util he was sent down to the minors to ensure that he did not have the same fate as kerry wood in his rookie season. the comparison to prior, wood, and becket can not be missed. abbott took a few steps forward, and would be an ace type prospect on any staff that did not have schilling on it. he showed extensive improvement in his control dispite his high walk totals. the rest of rotation has also improved.
kruk has been a disapointment despite a strong start to the year. he has struggled since being moved to first base. his future may be in lf becasue if he continues to stuggle at first he will not supplant chapman who has shown suprisingly clutch hitting to go with outstanding defense that casued management to toy with moving him to ss, and with marty scoffic almost ready in the ml the domiNATEors have alot of talent available at third. duncan has also struggled since being moved back to ss. ss is his natural position, but he had taken a liking to second which suited his skills better. without a decent ss on the team though the decision was made to make room for some of the derth of second baseman to get some ab. possibly the biggest suprise was marlyn byrd who has tailed off the last month of the season, but has shown the type of attitude that looks to have the domiNATEors of solidified for years to come. despite the pleasnat suprise the domiNATEors may be forced to trade him depending on the kind of talent those first round picks bring. because as much of a suprise as he has been he will not keep see or kruk on the bench if kruk has to go to lf and move see to cf. there are a few good prospects in the bullpen particullarly in the ml, but this year the bullpen has been simply awful, making the rotation look worse than it actulaly was.
all this to say things are looking up, and it would be a suprise if the domiNATEors find themselves in the basement for a third year in a row after 1953

1952 recap for the domiNATEors...

January 15, 2004 at 05:23PM View BBCode

The 1952 season was a mixed bag. the domiNATEors where once again the worst team in baseball, but many young players where given an opoortunity to improve, and most of them did just that. there where some notable disapointments, but management is estatic with the development of the offensive players particularly in the outfield. Tom See looks like he could be an all star any year now, and marlyn byrd was a pleasant suprise all year. dave bailor was a steady contributer, but did not impress management to the extreme of his outfield mates. two other notable offensive players who the domiNATEors are looking for big years from in 1953 are kruk and duncan. these young veterans have steadily improved, and added to their game. duncan could possibly double his power output in the next two seasons, and kruk may be an all star first baseman by 1954. travis chapman and placido polonco wher obviously overmatched in 1952, and the domiNATEors dont expect much improvment in 1953. both players could find themselves back in the minors or traded if the rest of the team lives up to their potential as early as 1953. the domiNATEors are thinking championship and with the type of players they have on offense it could come as early as 1953.
the pithcing staff also made some big strides. red abbott seems to be caught up in mediocrity, and the domiNATEors are worried that schilling may be following red down that same road to obscurity, but the rest of their starting rotation is ready to improve. possibly most suprising is the development of padilla who could finally be a 500 pitcher in 1953. greene and kelley could easily each win 12-15 games, but as domiNATEor fans know all to well that could mean loosing 15-17 too. schilling is still cant miss material, and may win 20 games and lead the league in strike outs soon, but abbott though just as talented as schilling needs to get his act together. if he does the domiNATEors could have a formidable rotation. the bullpen is still missing that bonafide fire throwing closer, but mesa, silva, and pillette form a core of set up men that may be as good as any team has. there are plenty of other promising young arms for that bullpen on the way too.
the domiNATEors could make some drastic improvements, and though they feel they have the talent to win it all they admit that for that to happen everything would have to work out perfectly. the highlanders pitching if it stays healthy may blow so far past the rest of the nl that the rest of the teams are all looking to make the wild card. you cant discount the nl champion knights or the red stockings either. the domiNATEors know that they have to get past chicago, st louis, brooklyn and pitsburgh before they even start to worry about the highlanders and the rest of the league, but here in philadelphia the future is looking bright.
