As a Lakers fan (I grew up in Long Beach, CA), I'm pretty excited about the trade. We didn't give up much, got rid of Kwame Brown (thank God), and will have the biggest starting five in the league with this move (6-1, 6-6, 6-10, 7-0, 7-0).
What do you guys think? Does this make them a serious contender in the Western Conference?
I think having a guy like Gasol who can spot up and shoot well at the four will keep teams more honest and open up the middle for Kobe. Any other thoughts?
I realize that there are a bunch of people who don't like basketball here, so just go ahead and ignore the thread.
And Ironhorse, even if you do like basketball, just go ahead and ignore the thread.

We were actually discussing this in the basketball thread. My thoughts are that things like this always look good on paper, we will have to see how everyone accepts their role. I think Gasol and Bynum will work well together. I always feel like Lamar doesn't understand how good he could be, I think his numbers will suffer. They are definitely a contender.

Even if he just gives them energy, he will help. I love basketball, but have lost interest lately. He has been a good player, so the change of scenery may give him a boost. Did they give a handful of magic beans to go with Kwame? WOWAnyway, the trade has TREMENDOUS upside, and no downside.

2) Can Odom be more role player than 2nd option, now? Can he be a Horry-type, a guy who has occasional great games, but plays defense, hits open shots, and gets dirty?
3) Are the next two drafts deep?
4) Will Kwame ever be any good? (they talk about Jordan's legacy because he played when he was old, he needs to worry about looking like Isaiah in the board room)
If Odom will be consistant as a 10 pnt 7-8 rebound guy with energy, I really like the deal. Kobe can rest more, because they have a go-to guy in Gasol. Bynum's good, and will get a lot better, but this helps him grow a little bit, because he's not ready to explode just yet. He can be the 3rd option, and concentrate on defense and rebounding. If I was a Lakers fan, I'd be excited.
Tell me more about what they gave up.

2. I think the pressure is lifted off of Lamar's shoulders. I don't think he ever had what it took to be the second option on a team in actual championship contention. As a free moving three, he'll have a chance to play his own game (which sadly, is a good player with absolutely no responsibility).
3. The Lakers gave up crap for this. Crittenden was a young promising player, but had no real shot at playing time under Phil. With D-Fish starting and Farmar playing very effectively as the backup, Crittenden is way better off somewhere like Memphis where he'll have a chance to grow into what everyone thinks he could be.
4. Pau's brother Marc is said to have been a hell of a player. I wouldn't know because he's still under contract in Spain. I guess we'll see next year, or the year after.
5. Everything else, including the picks, seems like no big deal when you get a 18/8 guy who is under contract through 2011 and is only 27.
Just my humble opinion, of course.

For me the bottom line on this trade is the Lakers gave up a bunch of players that may or may not turn out (that's includes the picks) for an All Star caliber bigman who has proven himself already. Now, once Bynum gets back how the hell are people going to defend the Lakers. They have to respect both Bynum and Gasol as legit scorers down low, but if you focus on them to much one of the greatest offensive players in NBA history(Kobe) will be one on one or even open. Fisher is having the best shooting year of his career, Vujacic and Radmonovic are hitting 3's consistantly. After all that you have a great young player in Farmar coming into his own. Don't forget the sparkplug Turiaf. It's just re-donkulous.Pages: 1
