New Feature - setting for not using tired RP

February 19, 2008 at 10:55PM View BBCode

I have put in a preference into the Manager area... well nearly have put in. Right now, all teams are using a default value of 2 for this setting, I will put in the website piece shortly.

The change is based on a suggestion from ScooterPie.

The setting will say, "If a RP has X or less Tired Bars, use him as a last option." Your choices for X will be 4, 3, 2, or 1. Right now, everyone will use 2. If more than 1 pitcher is tired, then Abe will re-shuffle them according to the original preference.

For example, lets say you have this set to 3 and your manager pref calls for RP to be used in this order for a particular situation:
Closer (4)
Setup/Closer (2)
Setup (3)
Middle (4)
Long (5)

Abe would look to use the players this way:
Closer
Middle
Long
Setup/Closer
Setup

This one will need some thorough testing, so your help will be appreciated. I have written the back end code, but not tested it yet beyond making sure the game code doesn't blow up. I will test it a bit tomorrow and try to put in the preference on the manager screen someplace.

Is there a way to view or log the pitchers bar setting before the game was played? It will be hard to verify changes unless you can see what the setting are before Abe plays the game to see if the logic was correct. I don't know if you can but in a temp logging into the box score before the game starts that prints out what all the pitchers bars are.

Another thing might be to print out when a pitcher comes into to pitch to say <name> enters from the bullpen to pitch (3 bars). With that, if the preference is use 3 bars and under last, then the other RPs should have pitcher before someone with 3 bars was brought in.

Once the changes go in, I will try and write down what the current pitchers bars are at and then go and check the next game that is played to see if it worked correctly.

Good suggestion, I have done just that. Seems like it is working backwards... namely the least rested pitcher is coming in first. Let me do some more fixing.

Ok, I have corrected the bug and it looks to be working correctly. I'm trying to verify that it works right if there are 2 players who are tired in the game.

I will try to put in the manager pref tomorrow on this.

Ok, I added this to the Bullpen Manager pref page. I decided to make the default 3 when we go to the main site with this, but all of you will have 2 selected now... feel free to change to test it out.

If you select 1, it has the same effect as turning this feature off.

I also tacked another mini option onto this.... in the event a tired RP needs to be used, I give you the option of using the least tired pitcher first, or using your bullpen prefs. It reads like this:

If more than 1 Reliever is to be used as a last option, (use the least tired pitcher OR use my bullpen preferences) when deciding which tired RP to use.

Howdy, looks like a great new option. I am wondering if there is any conflict with the other option of Use the most rested bullpen pitcher ... Bryce

Hi Bryce, that option would come before this one... I can't think of a way they could conflict.

I see the message in the boxscore, but cannot find where to set the prefs myself.

Howdy Casey.... You set them in the Rotation and Bullpen menu in the manager prefs.

Thanks, I was looking for a way to set each individual pitcher's energy bar... I see it now. It sets everyone's energy bar and is only one line.

What will happen if you have the setting to use a SP out of the bullpen when needed? Does that only happen when all the RP are used or not available? I'm assuming that they way it will work is that the SP will only be used if there are no other RP left and that this new setting just bumps them back in the preference to bring the pitch in. With that assumption, it will not stop them from entering the game but to move them back in preference just to come in after the other pitches in the preferences order have pitched (unless they have no bars anyways). Then the SP will still pitch once all the RP have been used, even if the RP were tired and moved back in the preferences due to the new setting.

It should only use a SP once all the tired RP are also used. Should be pretty easy to test, change your settings to 4 bars and see if a SP comes in.
