we all know about curt schilling going to boston and sheffield going to the yanks but who will have the upper hand after this offseason? apparantly the yankees have signed reliever tom gordon also. i dont think that this puts them over the redsox unless schilling has a year like last year. i have heard that the yankees r very interested in kaz matsui and japan's alltime saves leader, i forget his name. i also heard that there is a possibility that the yanks will get bartolo colon and javier vazquez. jayson stark says that the redsox r "inching" closer to a deal for arod where texas may take manny ramirez along with a few other prospects for arod. the main problem with that for the sox is that even if they unload manny stark says they will still have to pay between 70-96 million more on arod's salary than they would on manny's. i think that most of us will agree that the sox have the upper hand now but who will have the upper hand at the end of the offseason. i have to admit theo epstein seems to be a very good gm and that scares me but i have confidence in george and cashman. another problem for the redsox in the arod deal is that they have to pay 70-96 million more if they get arod and they only have a 35,000 seat ball park. if that trade goes down which it doesnt appear to be close at all right now that will make ticket prices thru the roof for the sox.December 02, 2003 at 12:44AM View BBCode
where did u hear about tom gordon? i havent seen that on any of the sites. epstein does seem pretty good and if im correct, he's only 30 or so which means he could be the GM for a long time. i dont think texas has plans to trade arod for ramirez, that's just rumor and speculation. the yanks are only paying sheffied $11-13 million a year, that sounds awfully low even for the yanks. an interesting thing i heard, the yanks didnt sign vlad because he was too expensive. that cant be rightDecember 02, 2003 at 12:57AM View BBCode
there has to be another reason that they didnt sign vlad unless he wanted like 35 mill a year or something. i heard about tom gordon on around the horn.December 02, 2003 at 01:17AM View BBCode
just read about gordon, $7 million, 2 year deal if im not mistaken. the article it came from also says that the yanks are close to signing quantrill which would suck. im a dodgers fan and that would screw themDecember 02, 2003 at 02:54AM View BBCode
All I care about is Vlad. I'm pissed that my Mets don't want him. He's only 27 for christ's sake! Maybe I'm biased because he's my favorite player but I just don't understand why teams aren't all over this guy. He's young and better than 95% of the league.December 02, 2003 at 03:19AM View BBCode
A-rod won't go anywhere. The rangers aren't interested in Ramierz is what i heard. They have good reason, Manny doesn't ever play full out, even on a winning team. Imagine how bad it will be on a losing team. Anyways A-rod might be one of the best deals in baseball, plays everyday and plays hard. At the end of the contract he might be the best player in history!December 02, 2003 at 03:22AM View BBCode
Everyone is holding off on Vlad so as to get his market value down. I don't think they planned it that way, they just knew that Steinbrenner wasn't going to go for him, so they could get him cheaper if they waaaaaiiiiiiittttttttt until february or so. I heard hes going to Toronto, but who knows?December 02, 2003 at 03:55PM View BBCode
oh PLEASE say vlad goes to baltimore. if baltimore puts a good team together it will be real interesting in the AL east. who will run out of money first in the arms race between NY and boston? i think that boston should try to get Clemens to sign with themDecember 02, 2003 at 03:59PM View BBCode
I would love to see Vladimir Guerrero return to the Expos. He would on a long-term deal if he really wants to stay there, and make about as much as he does now, or return on a one-year deal if his value goes down this year and he thinks he can make more next.December 02, 2003 at 08:58PM View BBCode
happy r u thinking that mayb if the sox sign clemens it will reverse the curse? that wont happen cuz they tried that with cone a while ago.December 02, 2003 at 09:30PM View BBCode
I saw on ESPN news that the Yanks want to trade for Brown. As a Dodger fan I think the Dodgers should do it. Brown is a great pitcher when healthy, but he is old and that contract is really holding them back. I think the Yanks will only give up Weaver but I still like the deal because the Dodgers are loaded with good arms and even if Weaver can fill the hole they have a bunch of guys who could step up. Now if only someoen would make a deal for Darrin Driefort (I know I spelled it wrong)...December 02, 2003 at 09:33PM View BBCode
brown for weaver, sounds good to me. i would trade jeff weaver for a gold fish at this points so i would love to see that. how serious all these trade talks?December 03, 2003 at 12:57AM View BBCode
weaver would be a throw in. dodgers need hitters so the yanks would be forced to give up a big bat, probably giambi. dodgers want nick johnson but that trade would involve odalis perez, not kevin brown. dreifort is a fairly good pitcher but the ingenius kevin malone had to pay him something like $55 million for 5 years. i would think the dodgers probably want to keep brown to help jackson, hanrahan, and miller develop better. those three compare with both oakland and chicago so watch outDecember 03, 2003 at 03:12AM View BBCode
now that ive read some articles about it, it looks like weaver is the heart of what la would receive. it would free up something like $12 million for a power hitter. unfortunately for weaver, edwin jackson is better and would easily become the fifth starterDecember 03, 2003 at 04:22AM View BBCode
IMO this would be a good deal without getting anything. Brown is an amazing pitcher but his contract has been holding the Dodgers back for years. I doubt that Weaver will crack the starting rotation (BTW I think Jackson still needs some seasoning) but right now the Dodgers have pitching to burn, esspecially if they resign Wilson Alvarez (spelled that wrong I know)December 03, 2003 at 08:24PM View BBCode
i think that it is a good deal for both sides. weaver may pitch a lot better in LA too cuz rite now in new york he is pretty much hated and is too shy and timid to handle that but a fresh start may help him a lot. i heard that the yanks have been talking with kaz matsui, paul quantrill, felix heredia, bartolo colon, javier vazquez and i think gabe white too. i think that there plan with kaz matsui if they sign him is to put him at second, move soriano to center, and trade johnson for pitching. as much as i like johnson and would hate to see him go i think that they could get a lot for him and that the team would be much better that way.December 03, 2003 at 08:35PM View BBCode
ok just checked espn.com and found out a few things. the yankees signed paul quantrill to a 2 year 6.8 mil deal as well as felix heredia to a 2 year 3.8 mill deal. they have also made an offer to shigetoshi hasegawa. kevin brown said that he will waive his no trade clause to go to the yankees or somewhere closer to his home in macon georgia. other deals that have been made r the giants resigning jeffery hammonds to a one year deal. raul mondesi and benito santiago r close to deals with the royals. the yanks also will open their season in tokyo, japan with a two game set with tampa. this may be a ploy to lure kaz matsui and hasegawa.December 04, 2003 at 01:02AM View BBCode
a few other things happened. twins traded milton to philly for silva, punto, and a player to be named. also, toronto signed a highly regarded taiwanese pitcher but he is 18 so i guess thats not huge. according to my local newspaper, dan evans has stated he does not want a pitcher in return for brown so weaver will stay with the yanks for now. weaver is 3-1 at anaheim and the chavez ravine is well suited for pitchers so he might have been okayDecember 04, 2003 at 03:23PM View BBCode
Now the Cubs have picked up LaTroy Hawkins, a great relief pitcher. I'm so glad that they are actually a player this offseason. Gives us all a little hope, probably more hope than we should have...December 04, 2003 at 05:15PM View BBCode
roger clemens is a HOFer, and the Yankees would like to have clemens on their team, but he is retiring, so the sox are screwing the Yankees out of something, a thing the Sox have never done. Yankees stole Clemens, and Boggs, and Ruth, and many other HOF red sox, so stealing Clemens would probably get Clemens in the HOF as a Red sock (or red sok or whatever is the singular of red sox) which will screw the Yankees out of a HOFer. Cone is not HOF material, and the Yankees didnt want him.December 04, 2003 at 08:29PM View BBCode
ok lets clarify some things, 1. the redsox traded clemens bcuz they thought that he wuz washed up, 2. the redsox sold ruth, and to my understanding (i may be wrong but...) the ruth deal wuz offered by the sox to the yanks. i dont really know wut the boggs situation is but the yanks making trades and free agent signings is NOT stealing players, if it wuz than boston has stolen many players (not many from the yanks but around the league) also. curt schilling anyone? but anyway free agency and trades r part of the game not some way of cheating that the yankees instituted so dont blame them bcuz they follow the rules laid out by the system and use the system to their full advantage cuz that is wut any team trying to win tries to do. i know the system is unfair and a salary cap is needed but c'mon dont blame the yanks cuz that big free agent wanted to win instead of wait to win and go to baltimore. bottom line, the redsox screwed themselves, with clemens and ruth and others, the yankees just accepted the offer.December 04, 2003 at 09:15PM View BBCode
Interesting. Here's one thing that isn't being written about a lot, but is going to affect this AL East battle: the Yankees are putting together one of the worst defensive teams in the league. Will they make up for that with their bats? Probably, assuming they get reasonable health out of Giambi and Bernabe (which may not be a great assumption, but it could happen). Defensively, though, this team is carrying a lot of guys who are going to hurt their pitchers' ERAs. Giambi, Soriano and Jeter are sieves in the infield. Boone is pretty good at 3rd, in fact he's real good. Williams is just an awful center fielder at this point, and should probably move to left or DH. Matsui is good in left, decent in center, but if he has to play center next to Bernie and Sheffield his shortcomings are going to be a lot more obvious. The other choice the Yanks have is to shuffle the positions around, move Jeter to center, bring in Kaz Matsui to play short, but even that has problems since Jeter hasn't played center field (and no matter what you may have heard, no, Biggio's transition from the middle infield to center was not smooth). For a good team, a team which is expected to win 100 games, this is going to be one of the worst defensive teams you'll ever see.December 04, 2003 at 11:50PM View BBCode
Yankees got Javier Vazquez from the Expos for Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera, and Randy Choate. They don't need Rivera or Choate, and this makes it look like they will sign another hitter with Nick Johnson gone. Vazquez gets a lot of Ks so the crappy defense won't matter as much.December 05, 2003 at 12:12AM View BBCode
i think that the johnson trade wuz used to make room for kaz matsui and move soriano to center and bernie to dh. yea they wont be a good fielding team but i really dont think that jeter is a butcher in the field, i dont know wut kaz matsui's defensive skills r like and i think that if they get him he will play second base. giambi is not a good defensive 1st baseman at all and boone is very good. im not sure about the arms in the outfield either, matsui has an average arm at best, bernie is below average if he plays center, soriano's is hard to tell cuz he has played second his entire pro career and i dont know about sheffield's. the redsox had a horrible defense last year too and still did pretty well so i dont think that it will hurt them that much.
