what are the mets doing?

December 09, 2003 at 08:25PM View BBCode

i just read rob neyer's arcticle on espn.com about the mets signing of kaz matsui. he says that the mets plan to move jose reyes to second and play matsui at short. neyer factored in the declines by hideki matsui and ichiro suzuki in their batting average, obp, and slugging% to find about where kaz matsui would fall. he came up with a .275 ba, a obp under .326, and a .390 slugging%. not spectacular by any stretch. matsui also has about a 2:1 k to bb ratio. now they are gonna move their BEST prospect in the last 20 years or so, to second base which will definetly affect his defense and could affect his confidence and overall development and performance, which i think is too much of a gamble to take on one of ur best prospects EVER. reyes is also projected to be a gold glover at short. also matsui who stole 62 bases in '96 has dropped to 13 last year and wuz caught 10 times last year. neyer also says that matsui is very small and will prolly take a hit to his power. and they paid him 6.7 million a year.

Let me clarify for those who haven't read it. A reader emailed Neyer and projected his BA, OBP and SLG based on his career totals. He also mentioned his decline in stolen bases, which is true. What he neglected to mention is that the SB decline has gone along with an increase in power: in the last two seasons, Matsui has hit, I think, 69 homers. So the projection, based on his career totals, isn't really accurate, and his SLG will probably be a lot closer to .450 than .350, and a .450 SLG for a SS is pretty good no matter how you look at it.

But look, we all know this isn't a move to try to compete on the field. Matsui will be a nice addition, and he could very well bloom into a damn fine player. This move, however, is all about the New York Post and how to wrestle headlines from it. Jose Reyes is a good prospect but let's not get carried away. This guy is still real toolsy, and doesn't carry the minor-league pedigree to suggest that he's going to become Alex Rodriguez. He can run, and he can field, and he can hit some, but he's extremely raw, and quite frankly I'm not sure the Mets, with or without Matsui, would be capable of helping him become a superstar. That's not to say he won't, but at 2nd or SS, it's going to be up to him.

The signing of Matsui by the Mets doesn't really mean anything in the long run. They get to show off their shiny new Japanese import for the press, and he'll get a chance to show people enough skills to get out of New York and onto a team that's competitive. It didn't cost the Mets that much, and if Matsui pans out he'll be nice trade bait for the time when the Mets finally realize that what they have on hand is never going to win them a championship, and start cashing in veterans for players who someday might actually bring them a pennant.

My Mets have disappointed me for some time but the signing of Kaz is actually a good move. While I think his hitting will decline you can't say for certain that it will just because other japanese players have had bad luck. I read an article(prior to the mets signing Kaz) where Ichrio said that Matsui was faster than him, which is amazing. Let's not forget that Kaz is a 7 time gold glove winner. If anything, as stated above, he'll be a good media icon to take the press away from the fact that the Mets will probably lose 90 games or so this year. Reyes is great, but he's undeveloped. Anywhere he plays he's still a learner, so moving him isn't that big of a deal.

You're a Mets fan, unclescam?
That has to be tough, they haven't had the best management over the years...

they need to go on a full scale rebuild, which they are unwilling to do.

The Mets never seem to do what they really need to do...

yes I'm a disappointed Mets fan. Last year was the first time they pleased me in a while(By playing all their youth) but I fear they're going to make the mistake of playing vets again this year. The first move they should do is get rid of Piazza...I never did like him. He's a nice guy(I met him in a 7-11) but the fact that he can't throw just kills me. Catchers are supposed to throw hard!

What are the Yankees doing?

this was on ESPN.com,

What the heck are the Yankees doing?George Steinbrenner seems to be trying to corner the market on malcontents, whiners and clubhouse cancers, ardently pursuing the likes of Gary Sheffield -- who is already trying to hold The Boss up for more money -- Kenny Lofton, David Wells, Juan Gonzalez and Kevin Brown.
