Javy!!!!

December 23, 2003 at 05:58AM View BBCode

Eh, okay...not so sure about this one. It'll be nice to see Javy Lopez in an Orioles uniform--the first catcher with any real power we've had since Chris Hoiles... The trouble with Javy is you can't really expect him to repeat the kind of numbers he had last year, and given those numbers (in a contract year) you have to wonder about his dedication to the game.

Nonetheless, they needed somebody threatening behind Tejada, and now (maybe) they've got it. They'll probably sandwich Gibbons between Tejada and Lopez (right-left-right), which frankly I think will work out okay. Is my next post to be entitled "Vladdy!!!!!"--I sure hope so.

Could still use some pitching.

i may be wrong but i believe maddux didnt use lopez. he used the back-up(cant remember who...). the cubs got rid of miller but picked up barrett. will they use barrett as a back-up? if they do then pudge would be a great idea

Maybe they could move Barrett to first.

Maddux used Henry Blanco as his catcher in 2003. The Braves wanted him to use Javy for the playoffs since Javy was hitting so well. Javy managed to hit 43 HRs in only 120-something games, which is really saying something. If that is the Javy the Orioles get, than he will be the second non-1B/OF to hit 50HR in a season and totally demolish the HR by a C record. But the Orioles could end up with the .660 OPS Javy of 2002 ($23M down the drain), or the 20HR Javy of previous years. I wanted Pudge a lot more, but I'll take Javy Lopez over Brook Fordyce and Geronimo Gil any day.

Yeah, Maddux didn't like Javy...I don't know if that means he's a bad catcher (game caller) or not, because Maddux was always picky. Kevin Millwood sure used him, though. ;)

actaully happy i wuz gonna agree with u that pudge is the best. the only problem with him is his age and the fact that he wants a long term deal. no1 really wants to be stuck with a mike piazza and have to go thru the moving to a new position and getting a new catcher hassles. nl teams probably will be wary of pudge just bcuz there is no dh slot so if his fielding and health begin to deteorate there arent that many places to stick him. but in the long run posada is better cuz he is younger.

I'd still take Posada...I'd just move him to DH. Say what you want...he's the worst defensive catcher I've ever seen.

Posada? You must be thinking of Piazza. He can't throw anyone out. Posada isn't good at defense, but doesn't totally suck either.

One thnig Javier Lopz has over Ivan Rodriguez is that excluding 2003, Pudge has had 3 injury-plagued years.

how old is javy? i now that both he and pudge are somewhere in there early 30s. thats tough bcuz u dont know if catching is gonna catch up with them or if they will still be able to be productive orif they r near the end of their careers. and then with javy u have to wonder which javy lopez ur getting. 40+ homer javy or under 20 homers .600 ops javy. javy's health has been better than pudges but u also have to worry about how long he will go b4 that deteoriates too. posada is a pretty good defensive catcher. he does seem to have trouble with contreras's splitter though. but that thing has the weirdest spin i have ever seen.

wait...i was watching ESPN and they said they were still thinking about signing I Rod and/or Vlad
skierdude44

y sign irod is the already have javy? unless they r gonna trade one (very unlikely, and they probably wouldnt get much cuz teams would have them over a barrell bcuz of the 2 catchers) or move one to dh.

Depends on the players. I-Rod would obviously catch, and they'd probably move Javy to first (since there's no more Conine). I think that would work fine, and it would be nice to have an extra catcher hanging around at another position. The only question is whether Javy would do it or not. My gut tells me he's not married to catcher, and that if they're still talking about I-Rod then they've probably already asked him about it.

wut about gibbons? i thought that if they get guerrero they would move gibbons to first, have vlad in right, matos in center and bigbie in left. i also heard that they mite try and trade gibbons and bigbie but i only caught the end of the story so im not sure who they may be trying to trade them to.

Yes but where's the pitching?

Duff77

December 26, 2003 at 11:02PM View BBCode

Smocko...there is none...but let's deal with one thing at a time...

If Vlad comes to B-more, one of two things happens: Either one of Bigbie, Matos, or Gibbons becomes trade-bait for a pitcher (probably Gibbons), or one of them becomes the DH (probably Gibbons). They'd be able to rotate guys in and out... Gibbons could DH one day and play 1st the next, then left and let Bigbie DH. Players probably hate that, but there's room for all those guys to play, even with Vlad.

who is playing third? batista is gone (not that that is a huge loss but who is gonna play there.) baltimore has definetly improved but they still have a few key holes to fill.

I would have to guess that either Jerry Hairston or Brian Roberts will have to move to third. It's also possible that Melvin Mora will get a shot over there. It think Mora would make the transition the easiest, but it'll probably be one of those three.

getting I rod would be REALLY smart. no one wants him, so now we can get him for a good deal. since they are both starting to get old, we can keep them both lasting longer than most catchers by making them split the work load 50-50, while the rest of the time playing 1st or DH.

also, we have lots of good young talent such as mora, Gibbons, Hariston, Roberts, Matos etc, and we can trade them for pitching. also we have the highest pay down for Sidney Ponson. not only this, but if some team wants to dump salery, we can take one of their higher paid pitchers off their hands. Roberts, hariston, and Mora can all play short, second and third, although Hariston probably wouldnt be very good at Third.
