Can the Rays hold on...Rays win World Series

October 07, 2008 at 01:43PM View BBCode

Yea, I said it. Rays win World Series. Although they need to beat Boston to get there, and who ever wins the NLCS (My money is on Philly). Seriously, this team though not overwhelmingly powerful gets the jobs done, a-la Yanks (1996-2000). Lets give credit where credit is due, Tampa wins in six.

Boston and TB is a coin flip...

LA is a piece of crap team. I hope they win, but they need to get lucky to do it. But its all a crapshoot, so they certainly could.

A piece of crap team?

I didn't realize that a team with the following rankings is so bad:
- 2nd in MLB (to the Blue Jays) in team ERA
- 5th in MLB (behind 3 non-playoff teams) in pitcher Ks
- 5th in NL (behind 3 non-playoff teams) in AVG
- 6th in NL (behind 4 non-playoff teams) in OBP

The Phillies rank behind the Dodgers in all 4 categories above. Granted, they are pretty terrible in SLG, but adding Manny to the team definitely didn't hurt. Don't discount them. They are a much different team than the beginning of the year.

You know what, let's leave all of this aside -- seemingly-crusty-old-man-but-actually-practically-a-child ironhorse just predicted a World Series victory for the Devil Rays, who are still two days shy of opening the ALCS. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, OK?

can we discuss the title of this thread for a moment please...

"Can the Rays hold on...Rays win World Series"

Is there a question in the beginning? Does the ellipse erase the question? Can the Rays hold on to what exactly? Then the bold statement of winning the World Series.

LA runs scored: 700. thats 50 behind the 2nd lowest playoff team. and 150 behind the highest scoring team.

runs allowed is 648, which is also the lowest, but by a significantly lower margin (23 runs vs 2nd lowest. 80 runs vs highest).

And this is all done with an extremely weak schedule, since a large portion of their games were against the terrible NL West.

the 4th place Toronto Blue Jays had a higher differential in runs, and they were playing in the AL East.

I agree, Happy. The Dodgers aren't a great team by any means (they are better than the 2006 Cardinals, though). But their pitching will definitely keep them in games in the playoffs. Just saying they arent a "piece of crap".

Shouldve said piece of crap for a playoff team. But this happens often.

Certainly shouldnt have beaten cubs. Low runs scored low runs allowed means higher luck involved in winning games.

Writing full sentances for suckers. What wrong with me right now?

can you do a little research and tell all of us their run differential after the Manny trade please?

no.

aren't the numbers after the Manny trade more indicative of the team they really are?

I would assume the numbers are a smaller sample size. I would also assume I didnt feel like doing the legwork for you.

I googled post-Manny run differential - this is from some guy on random forum, so take it with a grain of salt, but anyway:

Dodgers Aug. 1 and later (post-Manny): 30-24
Cubs Aug. 1 and later : 32-20

Dodgers run differential post-Aug. 1 : +33
Cubs run differential post-Aug. 1 : +54

i bet the angels would have like to have had manny on their team. instead of, i don't know, a guy who swings at everything that gets thrown up there?

I don't know. I think their Teixeira acquisition paid dividends and was the right move.

oh, yeah, teixera is awesome. vlad carried some nice numbers in the series, just couldn't get any help. i was just kidding around, no way the sox were sending manny to the angels anyway.

where does manny go next season anyway, you think? white sox?

I think he'd like to stay in LA, though the Mets will throw some serious cash at him...as will probably the Yankees...and maybe the Angels?

why not the tigers? they seem ready to pay pretty much anybody.

i'd guess the most likely spots are either new york team, the cubs or maybe the dodgers. the angels have a crowded enough OF as it is (will manny DH?) and i just don't feel the white sox getting into that kind of bidding war.
