Worst sports move of 2003?

December 27, 2003 at 02:28PM View BBCode

This is reprinted from ESPN, and the options have been weeded a bit to fit here, but it's a good question.
So what was the worst move??

now that murray has come into his own it has to be that trade.

tough question. i am torn between little leaving pedro in and torre putting and leaving weaver in. i think that when weaver gave up that game winning homer it wuz the turning point of the series so i guess il go with that one.

The Astros:
First they trade one of the best closers in the Majors because of payroll reasons, then they sign Petite for 30 million or so. Now, the GM has been playing golf with Clemens. No telling what kind of deal they put on his table. Then, they say they are commited to winning.....??

I don't know if them getting one of the most reliable pitchers in the game can really be considered a bad move...
A little puzzled by that, are you upset because they didn't sign their closer?
Certainly isn't a terrible move, not even in the same universe as the Pistons and the Bucks, especially the Bucks, what do they have to show for that trade? nothing...

they lost wagner but they have dotel who is just as capable of performing the closers job and they got one of the top notch starters that wuz availble and a decent prospect in duckworth. thats not too bad.

Yeah, it's not a bad deal to be an Astros fan nowadays, they are usually competitive every year. Pity the Brewers fans instead. The Reds, Rangers, and Expos fans. They are the ones whom are truly suffering.

The Ray Allen trade was a salary cutting move so the team could be sold. They got the Glove so they could try and make one last run into the playoffs with a veteran player, that failed. Michael Redd is playing very good for the Bucks this year at Allen's position so its not all that bad.

Alonzo Mourning one has got to be the worst. The thing that makes it bad is the Nets could not get any insurance on his contract (like is always done to recoup losses from injuries) because of the kidney problem, so they are stuck with the whol bill, which will count against the salary cap.

true but now the nets have collins and williams playing center the majority of the time. they played center the majority of the time last year and they made it to the finals so it mite not be a huge loss. i still would like zo more though.

The Nets have to go back to last year's centers, but in the next few years they will have almost no money for getting free agents, and might have trouble resigning k-mart.

The Nets had their best chance to win the last couple of years, it'll be downhill from here. Maybe they'll realize in time that it's never Jason Kidd being miscoached, its that Jason Kidd is uncoachable. I would trade him while he still has pretty good trade value, its their only chance to have a future. Soon enough the league will realize what a snake that guy is and his market value will plummet. (Unless the Knicks want him, they would take anyone right now...)

It's tough to pick which one was the worst move, but in terms of legacy, its got to be Emmitt Smith going to the Cardinals.
What was he thinking? Did his ego get so huge that he started thinking that it wasn't the offensive line that bailed him out for so many years? If he had retired last year like he should have he could have left with people still debating whether it was him or his line that made him the leading rusher, now no one wonders...
Emmitt, you were a great back, but now you've been exposed, and it's obvious that you are no all-time player. Sheesh, Curtis Enis could have been all-time rush leader with the line you had. Now you can't let it go and threaten to play again next year. Please Emmitt, retire while we can still remember that Giants game you played, broken bones and all, to get the Cowboys into the playoffs. The memory is starting to fade.

not Emmit retiring, he kept playing cause he loves to play the game, the same thing with Rickey Henderson and for the same reasons Michael Jordan came back to play with the Wizards. He has already built a legacy, playing as a mediocre or bad player for a few more years won't tarnish it.

I think Emmitt is a good back, but not as great as the line he's had. The only way he tarnished his legacy is by proving it was more about the offensive line than his skills.
Don't get me wrong, he is a hall of famer and a true competitor, it's just that he gave the player-haters ammo by sticking around.

Plus Emmitt signing with the Cardinals was a very bad move for the Cardinals themselves. They thought he would be a draw that would be able to help the runnning game, but he did neither, bad move by Bidwell. And yet, somehow, i'm not very shocked that Cardinals management made a stupid decision. Go figure...

Bad move for the Cardinals, not a bad move for Emmitt. Cardinals always make bad moves so it shouldn't be a surprise. Another 4-12 season. Them, Oakland, San Diego, and Detroit will have the top 4 picks.

Well, it's not necessarily a bad move for Emmitt, but it WAS a bad move. Just like if I decided to keep the extra 10 bucks a grocery store cashier accidently gave me and not give it back. Not a bad move for me, but it certainly makes me look bad...

But i'm harping on Emmitt too much, he can keep playing if he wants to, doesn't really bother me. As long as a team out there is dumb enough to offer him a contract, more power to him.
The real bad move was the Alonzo contract. How are you going to be stupid enough to offer a man a guarenteed contract after he almost lost his life to a kidney ailment?
They had to know he was iffy at best, and they needed some help in the middle right now, cause their window is about shut. It's only a matter of time before Kidd sticks it to New Jersey like he has done everywhere in his career, and Kenyon is a knucklehead who'll end up pulling a Shawn Kemp before long. Once the team has new ownership they'll realize how little money they're making and make drastic cuts and probably move the team too.
Now the Nets have thrown away so much money that they'll have to cut their roster down to make up for it, great job guys!

how about the redskins dont resign stephen davis, the second best RB in redskins history, and he immidiatly goes to carolina, and a team that's only major change was adding him went from totally crappy to really good.

The worst mistake in Washington was the fans not rising up Frankenstein style, with pitchforks and torches, to dispose of Daniel Snyder. Anything short of that, and they deserve all the suffering they get...

snyder isnt THAT bad. he is just very impatient. he is a new owner, and he will figure out soon that you cant win the super bowl by using all your money, because there is a cap. if he continues to try to run the team himself then i will stop hating him, but he has made major improvements, especially for the traffic getting to the game.

at least Snyder is TRYING to win. The Arizona Cardinals, Wizards, Hawks, Brewers, Expos, Pirates, Tigers, Devil Rays, and a few more, those owners don't even try to win, they need to be gotten rid of first.

expos have the longest drought of not getting to the playoffs in any of the 4 major sports.

they got in in 1981, but should have got in in 1994, so its not as long as it seems. Brewers got in in 1982. basketball playoffs are really easy to get into though, especially now in the east. football playoffs are still easier to get into than baseball. cardinals have made the playoffs something like ONCE in the last 40 years, so that's even worse than the Expos.

Ok, we'll start with the owners that don't even try to win, then we'll get to Snyder, who betrays a public trust through his incompetence.
