Maddux Going to the Hall

December 06, 2008 at 04:13PM View BBCode

Finally one player that is not debatable, how unfortunate.
Maddux with more wins than any guy since Spawn is set to announce his retirement Monday. With 4 Cy Youngs, tons of gold gloves, and a Ring to match, he is indeed going down as one of the all-time greats known for his control and location of pitches.

Career OPS+ is 5. I'm sorry, but the National League guys need to be able to swing the bat.

Perhaps, but then again no one (taking into consideration tradition) wants to see pitchers hit. At least I don't. It's a easy strikeout for a pitcher. It's determental to the offense. I like to see guys do what they get paid to do. Maddux was paid to pitch, hitting was secondary. But I get your point.

a) he's pulling your leg
b) i was unaware that todd mcfarlane's creation has such a good career.

Mike Hampton is the best pitcher of this generation.

That's just Moyer's way of making it look easy.

what i just loved about maddux was he just came right out this season and admitted he was just stat padding, and nothing else. that is awesome.

also: mussina. who cares really?

Moyer=The DiMaggio effect.

Just don't bother trying to find the painting of Moyer that's aging for him. He guards it well, and will kill if it is threatened.

lol books

Nice reference there, Goat, and Deke, way to undermine his literary genius with a Hollywood reference.

one does one's best. i'm not sure that movie should qualify as hollywood though. it was more the movie version of an off-off-off broadway production. if sean connery's been in a worse movie, i can't think if it offhand.

and its hard to compare Maddux with Spawn, seeing as its really damn hard to hit an axe

What Maddux did between 1994-1995 was just incredible. I mean, a WHIP of 0.811 in 1995? Holy crap. His ERA+ those two years was 271 and 262, respectively.

On a side note, it's weird to me that you guys never want to discuss actual baseball in the Sports Talk forum. Apparently there needs to be some Self-Congratulatory, Smarmy forum where you all pat each other's backs on how clever you can be ("How's that working out for you, being clever? Keep it up, then. Right up."). Certain posters aside, this seems to be the norm around here.

we like talking about sports just fine. what we occasionally object to is an unending series of 'does (insert name of usually borderline candidate) belong in the hof' and 'look at my (occassionally) ridiculous list of best (insert position/skill)' threads. once in a while, this is fine, and can be an interesting coniversation. once. every day a new version of the same thread ad nauseum gets, well, nauseating.

Perhaps I can look forward to forum-fatigue in a couple years as well. I guess I'm just new enough to enjoy the hypotheticals still.

Yeah, for the record, those that know me are well aware that I was enrolled in five years of college before joining the Marines. I had some time to squeeze some Wilde in there somewhere, as well as freakin write a paper on it. I still failed World Lit.
