Thoughts on draft picks

January 20, 2004 at 07:00PM View BBCode

My first two seasons as part of the JWL were a great learning experience. I learned better how to coach players and manage the draft. The second season I played around with trading for picks and planning or the future. And you know what I learned?

Trading for anything more than a first round draft pick isn't worth it, unless you're trading middling talent to awful talent for it. I got burned (my own fautl) when I made a couple trades with not getting enough in return I think. Only one of them hurts though, because the other one I had replacements.

I think the draft was weak in one respect, a lot of players were 21 and older it seemed. Which as far as I can tell, won't really coach into much if they didn't start out as much. I see this league being pretty weak in 5-6 seasons comparatively. It might be more fun in the respect, though, if teams have to really spend time developing new talent.

For now, I think I will hold off on any trades, and just rebuild this season and the next, and try to compete in '55.

Btw, anyone who knows a custom league with any openings, let me know. I'd like to try one of those. :spin:

if i was a nice guy i would have made a msg like this after i traded away 3 stud pitchers for draft picks after the first season.
on this draft i cant believe all the cf. your right they are all in their 20s. i think they are more talented than last years players. i was still getting b- players in the 3rd round this season. but with three number one picks i evend out all the positions at 10 and got 2 cf and a 1b all above 20. than i got 2 other cf in the next two rounds for a total of 4 cf, rf, 1b, and a ss. 7 picks all over 20 and no pitching. thats the thing i would say about this draft is that there was very little pitching. the only highly rated, B+ type player was a pitcher but even he has bad control and is a rp. so like i said my plan worked in that i was a talent depleted team and i got the best talent available, and i would rather it this way than the way it was last year where i wanted piching and ended up with a c 21 yr old in the second round. whats the probability of the best player available being a cf this many times in a row.
on my team i now have 4 cf who where picked in the first round of their draft.

Well, I think in 5-6 years it could be real interesting. When I took over the Chicago team, it was a completely new team from the expansion draft. I had two old pitchers, and two super young pitchers. I did make one bad trade that year, even though I got a future stud SP. I should have traded an older pitcher I think.

What's killed me is that I've had no offense. No power really to speak of and I"ve rated in the bottom half of runs and home runs both years. Teams like Cincy, NY Knights, Nationals have had great hitters from the start. So right now I feel some teams have huge talent from the initial draft that will never happen again, while the rest of us are trying to rebuild.

All that being said, I've had a lot of fun and enjoy every day of this. I want to play more SimDynasty because of it. :)

for sale at a reasonable price.
would like a c+ with good control 20 or younger pitcher. rp or sp is fine. i wont trade for someone with bad health at all though. good speed, and had alot of improvements in the off season so he should have a much better year. we could help each other out. i dont want to let any of my young talent not get developed, and you could get a talented young player for an average pitcher.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Jimmy Wynn League and if I can assist some other owners to get better and be more involved in the JWL then so much the better..

I am going to look at both your teams and lend my opinion and maybe some advice for each one of them..
