Trading

February 01, 2004 at 09:33PM View BBCode

Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on trades. I know some of us (Philadelphia-lol) have no problem making a deal. I ask because I have sent some trade offers and U2Us without getting a response. I know RL comes first but it is nice to get some type of reply. I enjoy trading if I think I can improve myself even marginally. When a trade is declined and no counter offer is made nor explanation is sent I wonder why it was declined. I know I have been guilty of this myself from time to time but I try to take the time to respond if it is a legit offer. Most are but you can see some crazy ones in a SS league. Had one in past where this guy wanted my best player and kept offering my 10 guys for him. Of course only 1 of them was worth keeping even on a minor league roster. Anyway if you feel like it post your thoughts. Also, I am still looking to improve my staff this year so if you have an old guy and think you're out of it this year llet me know he is available and I'll make an offer! Thanks and GO PANTHERS! :)

i do like to trade but...

this season i promised my self that i would stop making so many. of course than i ended up with 4 cf from the draft. that added to the fact that i had a cf playing all 3 of positions from last year was a bit of a problem. so all in all i didnt change in actuality my mindset did change. im not going to change my draft strategy though because i got talented healthy fast guys all the way through.
i would be interested in changing my pitcing strategy though because i may have put to much emphasis on endurance and control because a b+ 17 yr old went later in the draft and he had bad control other than that i cant figure out why i didnt draft him. is it possible to emphasize control and endurance to the extent that you dont draft a player that much younger and talented than the player you drafted
my philosophy is that even if next draft i get 4 more cf if they are the most talented thats what i want. eventually ill end up with that most talented catcher and if my pitching improves i will have a good team. as it is i have 7 first rounders on my 40 man roster. my philosophy is that the more young talent i have the better my future looks even though i have no c and am weak at ss and sp. i have to many of but enough that i have a b rated 23 and 21 yr old rotating through the ml and majors.

...and am fairly certain this wasn't directed at me. I'm going to try to lay off the trades to certain owners, but I'm not giving up. I recently offered a trade where I wanted to acquire a C+ pitcher, who wasn't all that good for a 22-yr old 2B (B- overall), a 24-yr old SS (B overall), a 27-yr old LF (B- overall) and a 33-yr old SS (B overall) and was slapped in the face with "I need more pitching" on the reply with the same C+ pitcher in return all 3 of my B+ pitchers. I just don't get it. Maybe I'm dumber than I thought. Anyway, if anyone wants to make me an offer for those same players, I'll most likely take it.......................

Didn't mean to direct anything negative at anyone. Just trying to get an idea on everyones' thinking when it comes to trades. If you don't like to deal, fine, we all try and build our teams our own way. If you want to use the draft and waiver wire and avoid trading, go for it. If it works for you, who can argue. I was hoping to get the thoughts of more league members. Despite his natural shyness, Philly has managed to speak his mind. :D Just wondered how others felt. Papa has always been good to respond to offers as have several others. Part of my curiosity is also, I must admit, frustration. I do wonder sometimes if the offer was just not what someone wanted or if the player was untouchable. When I make an offer I try and send over something I honestly think will help your team. You might not agree but if you don't respond I will just be left to wonder. A case in point is an offer I made to St.Louis in our first season. I offered him a power hitter and he told me he valued contact hitters. Now I know what he values and if I send a trade offer I use that info. I won't offer him a "C+/A" guy because I know he'd prefer a "A/C+" guy instead. Hope we can get some discussion going. 32-29, sigh. So close. go panthers. :)

Trading and Counter Offers

:cool::cool2::spin::D:spin::saint::cool2::cool::puzzled::rolleyes::puzzled:
Keth, first off. The Panthers gave notice that they are for real. From an investnment standpoint, the team covered and showed that they could score against a good defense. The Patriots were in a "dog fight" throughout the Super Bowl and IMHO it was a very good spectator's game.

As far as trading goes, I also try to respond to all trade offers. However, I am probably "guilty" of being too conservative when I make an offer as to what I am providing. This comes from my conclusion that I cannot really know what another GM might be looking for in his team's needs and development. Another GM may be grooming the player that I am trying to trade for, for a key position on his "future team".
I am, of course, concerned with my team's development and the strengths and weaknesses that I perceive my team possesses. Therefore I generally offer what I consider to be "fair value" with the thought that if the other GM is interested at all that he would take the time to counter.
Mostly, I consider trading my bench or minor league players but if an offer comes in for one of the starters then I would be looking for an equivalent player in a position that I have weakness at.
Of course, I believe we all look towards youth and SP positions as key and we all have different "surpluses" at different positions and at different times.
But I also , always try to respond with either a counter offer or U2U if I am declining a trade offer.

Just MHO on the subject.

i would say that the responders thus far are the people who have always been very polite if not active regarding trade proposals. i know because i try to offer a trade to most teams every week. i agree with keth. one team i have noticed who does not accept propose or counter trades is boston. i am being specific because though i notice they remain inactive in the trading department they have always rejected my trades promptly which i apreciate. other teams like the highlanders have gotten better each year regarding trades. they are a good example of what some teams may be missing in that tom see who i traded for from the highlanders last season was on the top of my wish list in 51. i offered just about every player on my roster, draft picks; the works. he never rejected or accpeted either way. early in the 52 seasoni got him for fitzpatrick who is a decent pitcher, but he was basicly a throw in from washington in a draft day type of deal. maybe he valued the 28 yr old pitcher more than the teenagers i was offering, and i dont blame him as he has possibly the best team in the league on paper. where the inactivity in 51 hurt him thow is that since i never recieved any response in 51 in 52 when i traded daulton to him for draft picks i made him give me robertson a 22 yr old b rated pitcher. who was better than daulton at the time, on the condition that i would trade him back for my draft pick. i felt that i needed to protect my assets after a lack of percieved activity the previous year. now at this point i have as much faith in him as i have in the washington, and both ny franchises. the yankees and nationals have both made trades for draft picks with me where i didnt ask for any colateral. the moral of the story is that even if you dont want to make trades if your polite about rejecting offers it will only help you in the future when you have a reason to try and make a trade. i particularly like chicago and ny nl seem to always send a utu with reasons why they dont want to make a trade.
just figured id put more of my 2 cents in

my computer crashed on wednesday, got it back up saturday nite.
now-ABOUT TRADES--
occasionally i will miss a night or two (if my kids need the computer for school projects). if i don't promptly answer a trade, it is because i don't have access tomy computer. i DO REVIEW all trades, NONE are declined without being reviewed. If i have no pressing need or none of the players offered interest me i will not offer a counter. But, if you would like a reply that is not a problem, i really never thought about it. i traded an awful lot the first year, but i have drastically slowed down in trading. after a couple of drafts and off-season (improvements) i have my strategy in place and outside of an injury or drastically underperforming player i don't see an increase in trading. i will continue to review all trade offers. if i decline a trade and you don't understand why, just ask me. i have received many lopsided trades and offered some lopsided trades, i'm not offended by them, please don't be either. hey--everybody takes a shot at it now and then.

If there was an immediate counter offer function, I feel trading would take on a whole new face. The U2U functionality is disconnected from the trading system. Even a comment field for declines would also help a ton. I think most everyone in this league is sincere, but for instance, I'm likely to decline a trade to not keep someone hanging, not have time for a response, and then forget to follow up. Just my .02.

i will try to make counteroffers if i am remotely interested with the trade, but sometimes i just forget to counter...or i just dont even like the trade and therefor no counter

I have to agree with caltec123!!!

just decline...

February 04, 2004 at 10:35PM View BBCode

for me all you really have to feel obligated to do is decline them. i know i offer alot. but when you dont counter or decline to me it means one of two things either you arent paying attention or your considering. so the possibility that i could make a trade gets my juices going, and i become rather anxious and impatient. i agree that the trade desk could be improved with a simply counter offer icon, msg for rejected trades, and or the availability of using the utu's right from that page.
