here is one of my college application essays, i dont feel like taking out all the BS that doesnt have to do with this subject...
Topic: Write an essay of your choice, and then at the end write a paragraph explaining what you think this essay shows about what kind of person you are.
Barry Bonds is the second best baseball player ever. I am part of a small minority that believes this. Many people donâ??t think that Bonds is as good as Ted Williams or Willie Mays, and those who do usually think he is better than Babe Ruth. I am going to argue that Ruth is better than Bonds, and Bonds is better than Williams and Mays.
Proving Ruth is better than Bonds is simple. Most people who put Bonds ahead of Ruth argue that Ruth was just â??at the right place at the right timeâ?? as the reason he revolutionized baseball. However, he was the only one to invent the long ball. During two seasons no other AL team hit more home runs than Babe Ruth. People also forget that Babe Ruth was a great pitcher at the beginning of his career, winning 20 games twice. His career ERA (earned run average) was 2.28. Walter Johnson is considered the best pitcher of all time, and his ERA was 2.17, only slightly lower
Barry Bonds plays in a time where both the average SLG (slugging percentage) is higher, and the average OBP (on base percentage) is higher. Nevertheless, his career SLG is .602 and his career OBP is .433, compared to Ruthâ??s astounding SLG of .690 and OBP of .474. Bonds is a better baserunner. Ruth had 123 career stolen bases, compared to Bondsâ??s 500 stolen bases.
Proving Bonds is better than Williams and Mays is harder. Williams was better in the batters box with an OBP of .482 and a SLG of .634, both higher than Bonds. But Williams had only 24 career stolen bases; Bonds had twice as many in one season. Williams was at best an average fielder, while Bonds has won eight Gold Gloves. Finally, Bonds had perhaps the two greatest hitting seasons in history. In 2001, Bonds broke a single season record by posting an .863 SLG and in 2002, broke another single season record with a .582 OBP.
Mays is the reverse of Williams; he is perhaps the best defensive outfielder in the history of baseball. He won a Gold Glove every year from 1957 to 1968. His stolen base career total was 338, indicative of a great baserunner. But with a career OBP of .384, and a career SLG of .557, Mays isnâ??t statistically close to Bonds in the batters box.
No doubt Willie Mays and Ted Williams were great players. Neither was as good an all-around player as Bonds. Bonds is one of three players to get 40 steals and 40 home runs in the same season. He is the only player to have 500 steals and 500 home runs in his career (no one else has 400 of both). His speed, batting power, and great defense make him the second best player ever.
This essay demonstrates my interest in both history and math. Obviously I love the history of baseball, but I support my argument with statistics. People who are not interested in math make arguments that include â??club personalityâ?? or â??clutch hittingâ?? which cannot be quantified. This essay also shows that I love to argue. I love debating in all forms. This may be the direct effect of having two lawyers as parents. My mom loves history; my dad loves baseball. Both love math. Both were students of the University; I hope to be too.

hope you're applying to a community college:lol:
actually, i hope the best for you and your college aspirations.
you follow a long post by a relatively short one when you couldve edited the long one. also, what proof do you have that Mays and Williams are 3rd/4th best players

obviously we agree that ruth is the greatest player of all time, but how can you put bonds ahead of mays? look at all the inflated numbers of today. do you think bonds would be the slugger that he is if he played forty years ago?
also, who gives a crap about bonds' stolen bases. bonds probably stole half those bases just to pad his numbers, not to win ball games.
i have to go, but i will definitely be back to argue more. :D

To pad his stats? he padded his stats with 500 steals??? FIVE HUNDRED! that is a huge amount of steals for a slugger.
Bonds was around most of his career before the inflated stats. Also Bonds plays in one of the 2 Pitcher's parks left, and has NO ONE hitting around him. Although Mays is the best defensive player ever, Bonds is a great defensive player in his own right.

didnt we have a topic like this before and we concluded that it is too hard to compare players from different eras. i mean i think that ruth is the greatest player ever and i think most will agree but it is hard to make a list of say, 1-10.

wrong. bonds had kent hit in front if him, and he was at best a "good" player. As Doug B correctly pointed out, Ruth was in murderers row.
i left out all players before the modern era (around 1920) which left out Wagner and Walter Johnson among others.

If you're going to leave off players because of their era, then why not draw the line at 1947? A lot of other people have. Honus Wagner is one of the tiny handful of players that you can legitimately make the argument that they were the greatest player ever:
-He was the best hitter, at any position, of his era. He led his league in OPS 8 times, and was the dominant offensive player in the game before Ty Cobb.
-He stole 722 career bases, 10th all time. Yes, more bases were stolen then, but he did lead his league in steals 5 times.
-He played (arguably) the toughest position on the diamond to fill, and at the very least the most important defensive position. Whereas his competition in best player ever is mostly outfielders (Ruth, Mays, Williams), he is the only infielder.
-He played that position, by all contemporary accounts and according to the statistical evidence, better than just about anyone else with a long career except for Ozzie Smith.
If you compare Honus to other players, based on position scarcity and achievements at the plate compared to the norm for his era, you will find him easily in the top 5. If you add in his baserunning, his versatility and his excellence in the field, you can make a case that he was the best player ever. Personally, I know that Ruth was better (mostly because he was also a pitcher, and a damn good one), but Honus should be in this discussion.

Hank Aaron Anyone?

1st all-time in Hrs (755) and RBIs (2297), 3rd all-time in hits (makes for a great trivia question), 3rd in runs, .305 lifetime avg., 240 steals. Also 1st in total bases.
He's better than Rogers Hornsby at least. :P
