Tiger Hawks look to get Reis experience

December 10, 2009 at 06:21PM View BBCode

Now that they have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, the Chicago Tiger Hawks can fully look forward to next season. As they do so, their gaze is an optimistic one.

"We have a lot of offensive firepower," Tiger Hawk manager Joel Fry says, "And that's going to win us a lot of games. But what we really need is some pitching."

The Tiger Hawks' lineup was loaded with offensive stalwarts such as shortstop Joel Fry, catcher Ben Herman, and right fielder Marc Von Ahnen. Both Fry and Herman look to finish in the Top 5 of the MVP voting this season despite the Tiger Hawks fighting to finish above .500 this year.

But where Chicago is hurting is in their pitching rotation. The team's "ace," Paul Snyder (the team's only 'A' rated pitcher at 'A-') is 7-10 with a 4.41 ERA. The team's best starter has been Ed Cano (B+), whose 8 wins, 3.93 ERA and 83 strikeouts all lead the team. This gives the team hope for 1951, although Cano will be 34 next year.

30-year-old rookie Bill Reis will be making his 3rd career start today, and manager Joel Fry is hoping it goes better than his first two: Reis is 0-1 with a 14.09 ERA and 2.74 WHIP in just 7.2 innings. He was called up to replace Chuck Templeton, who was 0-4 with an ERA of 8.46 in over 55 innings pitched. While Fry would not commit to Reis over Templeton for all of 1951, he did promise that they would give Templeton a 2nd look. "He's only 26," noted Fry, "So his career isn't over. He's got solid velocity but when you've allowed more walks than strikeouts through half the season, it's pretty obvious you need more seasoning. But he'll bounce back."
