Minor League Bug
November 01, 2002 at 07:49AM View BBCode
:mad::mad::mad:
Once, I could might have been able to over look, twice, I would have been a bit unhappy, but
thrice is just ridiculous! This time the now infamous "Henry Frieburger" improved twice in two series! He is 23,
and a pitcher! In the mean time, Cy Valentine (17, SS) has not improved even once! Now, it has been said that I am just being a bit impatient, and that he will improve when given time, but c'mon folks, it's June 6, and I have yet to see even
one improvement! A few seasons back, I had three guys in the minors, all 18 or 19, and all position players. They traded off improving 6 out of 7 games. Which means that only 1 game out of 7, no one improved. These guys were improving practically every game, and my guy hasn't improved once. To reiterate, Henry Frieburger has not had a single CP on him all year!
I think that this needs some major attention, and soon. I will try to solve the problem by claiming someone off the waiver wire, younger than Cy Valentine, but if this doesn't work I will be really mad.
Ok, I know the first thing all of you will say is "Cool it Brad, it's not that important," but it is to me. I think that this has transformed from a minor bug to a major bug. Granted I shouldn't be
that mad, since it's only Beta League, and we are here to test, but still, it is ridiculous.
Here are the boxscores for the past two times it happened.

Has anyone else seen this happen?
I've had some guys that just never improved. One was an 18 year old pitcher. I have never seen guys without coaching points improve unless there were unassigned points floating around. Maybe there's a bug with Brads team only. I agree, it's a frustrating bug.

I have noticed that younger guys- 17 and 18, don't seem to improve. I've also noticed that the improvement seems to go to the oldest of the players I've got improvement points on. I always assign 5 points to 3 players- since I rarely have more prospects than that. Kid Gleason/Don Kirrene, for example was 17 last year and I'm fairly certain he didn't improve at all, and I didn't notice an instance of him improving this year. It seems to depend on who else is in your sytem. Ramon Fernandez is 20, and when he was in the minors he was getting all the improvement, now it's 19 year old Kevin Swartzel. I'd say it's something that should be looked at...

I have 2 17 year old guys with 5 CP on them and i know they are improving because they are moving up the player ratings list. Just so you guys know it isn't impossible.

Are they the youngest guys on your team?
And how does your minor league screen look after you say, "save coach points"? Does one of them end up at the top? Also when you originally go to the minor league screen, is one of them at the top?
Henry Frieburger is at the top of both of those screens, and I can't figure out which one of them (if any) is the cause of the problem.

I've had 5 coaching points on my youngest minor leaguer as well and he has been improving regularly, so I don't think it's a universal "youngest guy doesn't improve" bug.

Would you mind answering the questions I posted before? (So that I can figure out why my guy isn't improving?)
Because its like I said, a couple of seasons ago, I had 3 18-19 year olds, and one of them improved almost every game, and it was almost like they traded off. I have yet to see one improvement from my 17, and it seems
really strange.

"Are they the youngest guys on your team?" Acually no I have 2 younger guys. One does have 5 CP on him and I can't say I have noticed himmoving up the player ratings chart. I will keep you posted on that.
"And how does your minor league screen look after you say, "save coach points"?" Another guy (Luke Appling) is at the top of the page he is like 28 years old and I have no clue if hes improving, I will check that.
"Also when you originally go to the minor league screen, is one of them at the top?" No

I just check on Luke Appling and he has move up the list on player ratings. Like I said he is 28 and after hitting save changes on the minor league screen he shows up at the top of the list.
If anybody wants me to check if their guys who (like Appling) show up at the top of their minor league screen after saving changes, then post those guys names.

The guy moved up the player rankings page? I bet it's due to other guys deteriorating.
I have 5 CP on my youngest guy and he improves regularly.
How are the guys ordered when you hit "save points"? I can't figure it out.
Brad, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence but you do have 15 CP distributed through the minors with the maximum being 5 on a single player, right? Do you happen to have extra points from others when you made a trade? Like I said, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, I'm just trying to understand the situation.

I was wondering about Andrew's last post too. Did you actually mean to say his ratings are improving, or his player rating? And what sort of timetable or you talking abou tin refenrence to these movemnets? If it is during the regular season, then it couldn't be due to player deterioration, but only due to his improvement.
Aaron: Yeah, I understand you. Part of this is due to the fact that I am not always clear in my posts, so sorry about that. But to answer your question, yes, I do have 15 CP distributed through the minors with the maximum being 5 on a single player. Jus tto let you all know what I am doing, I have 5 on Cy Valentine, 5 on Franklin Gardiner, and 5 on Bobby Bradley. This adds up to a total of 15. Nobody else has any points assigned to them. Before I demoted Gardiner, I had 5 on Fred Lowry. Lowry has improved a bit during this season, and Bradley has averaged an improvement about once every 4 to 5 games. Cy Valentine has not improved once.
Also, when you hit "Save Points" at the bottom of the minor league screen, who is at the top of the page? My postulate is that this person will get the CPs from your youngest player, (especially if that is how you have sorted the page just prior to clicking the "Save Points" button), even though it isn't shown on the screen. On my screen, Henry Frieburger is this person, but without further evidence, I can only conclude that this is an anomaly supported only by me, and with some evidence from Andrew (depending on what he meant by "moving up the list on player ratings")
One more thing. I'm sorry to be making such a big deal about all of this, but it was really bugging me, (no pun intended, but I still think it's kinda funny), and I figured that the purpose of the Beta League was to find bugs, so I reported it.

It has something to do with the fact that Valentin is one of the most suspect prospects I've ever seen...and maybe your minor league coaches see that and behind your back are spending time with Freiburger! seriously though...it does seem to me that a guy is more likely to improve if he's worthy of the points...the best you could ever expect from Valentin with the linear improvement system is that he might be a backup quality SS with decent fielding and good speed. Age isn't everything, just because he's young doesn't mean he's going to be a star.
Or maybe this whole game is out to get you!!

It's just that it's been said that a young player will improve about one part of a letter grade per year, so I figured that by the time he was 20-21ish he would be about a B, and since after that it slows down he would be an A by the time he reaches his prime. So far, that is working with Bobby Bradley, and he wasn't much better, (if at all), than Cy Valentine.

He was moving up this list

during the season, so it is not due to players getting worse.

Umm, I think that would be the same thing. I don't know.

That definately means there is a problem. Do you also have all 15 CPs assigned, with no more than 5 on any one player? (Just to make sure...)

Just as a side note about minors on my team in WML...
I've been tracking improvements for my players all along. Anyhow, I've had an OF (never at the top of the list in Minor leagues unless you sort for speed) that I've kept 5 CP on since the beginning. He's having no problems, he started 1950 at age 20 and got 100 improvements (not sure of the numbers but this is generalizing), 1951 at age 21 he received 90 improvements, 1952 at age 22 he received 80 improvements. Only in 1952 was there another player with 4 or 5 CP on him, mostly that player was a 20 year old P, I think he got 15 or so improvements(?).

So your point Tysok, is that my guy should have improved by now, right?

Yes 5 each on 3 different players.

Hmm, I wonder if the other people who are having no trouble with their youngest player improving have 5 CPs on 3 people as well. Hmm?
Also, have you been able to find anything concerning this Tyson?

For reference mine were not 5 on 3. I had 5 4 3 and two 1s in 1952, in 51 I had 5 4 and all 1s and in 50 I had 5 3 and all 1s.
Also my memory was way off, I must be gettin old. My OF had 34 improvements in 1950, 32 in 51 and 28 in 52. The pitcher with 4CP in 52 had 17 improvements.
Total improvements for me were 66 in 50, 94 in 51 and 88 in 52. Not a good total track though, in 50 I had only a few young guys in the minors, in 51 I had lots but all were on hitters for the most part, and in 52 I had 2 pitchers set with 4 and 3 CP.

I noticed in a game that I just played with you that Luke Appling improved. You still don't have any points on him do you?
