Tracking a prospect

May 01, 2010 at 09:05PM View BBCode

It is a little more difficult to track the progression of a minor league prospect in a blind league, but it can be done.

Let's take my young catcher [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7169266]BILLY MILLS[/url] for example.

Using the Promote/Waive function under the GM tab I find the following:

Arm.......Mills is 4th best of 22 B rated players.
Range...Mills is 5th best of 16 C rated players.
Speed...Mills is top among 10 C rated players.
CVR......Mills is 5th best 8 A rated players.
PVR......Mills is 8th best 9 C rated players.
CVL......Mills is 4th best of 9 A rated players.
PVL......Mills is 13th best of 16 B rated players.

Arm and Range each account for 10% of a players total rating and speed and the hitting ratings account for 16% each.

The number grades are determined under the following schedule:
F = 0-3
D- = 4-11
D = 12-19
D+ = 20-27
C- = 28 -35
C = 36-43
C+ = 44-51
B- = 52-59
B = 60-67
B+ = 68-75
A- = 76-83
A = 84-91
A+ = 92-100

As we can not see the +'s or -'s we really need to use the following scale.

F = 0-3
D= 4-27
C= 28-51
B = 52-75
A = 76-100

I can estimate Mills' OA grade by applying the following formula:

Arm (19/22 X 24 + 51 X .10 = 7.17)
Range (12/16 X 24 + 27 X .10 = 4.50)
Speed (10/10 X 24 + 27 X .16 = 8.16)
CVR ( 4/8 X 24 + 75 X .16 = 13.92)
PVR (2/9 X 24 + 27 X .16 = 5.42)
CVL ( 6/9 X 24 + 75 X .16 = 14.56)
PVL ( 4/16 X 24 + 51 X .16 = 9.12)

Mills' total rating is determined by adding the score of each catagory.

Arm .........7.17
Range......4.50
Speed......8.16
CVR..........13.92
PVR..........5.42
CVL..........14.56
PVL...........9.12

Total rating 62.85

I would say that Mills is a low B overall as his rating falls toward the low end of the B range of 60 - 67 points. Considering that Mills is still just OS 20, I'd have to say that he was an excellent prospect and well worth the 5 CPs that I have on him.

Most seasons I will crunch the numberrs on all of my draftees and on any of the young major leaguers that I have on the team. This gives me a very good idea of Were my players stand.

Questions?....Please ask them.

Wow I am impressed, Jim. I have been using a divining wand all these years.

Certainly not as exact as you are but you are the magician in JFL for sure.

Nice formula.

Mills had significant improves in Arm/Range/Speed during the course of the season and continues to develop as a top catching prospect.

Arm (20/22 x 24 + 51 x .10 = 7.28)
Range (16/16 x 24 + 27 x .10 = 5.10)
Speed (10/10 x 24 + 27 x .16 = 8.16)
CVR (4/8 x 24 + 75 x .16 = 13.92)
PVR (2/9 x 24 + 27 x .16 = 5.17)
CVL (6/9 x 24 + 75 x .16 = 14.56)
PVL (4/16 x 24 + 51 x .16 = 9.12)

total rating........................63.31

Mills did not show great overall improvement from his previous rating of 62.85 but I do believe that his overall score is adversely affected by his relatively low score in PVR. I believe that his total is somewhat higher in the catagory due to the other C rated players being clustered more toward the C+ end of the range. If I really had to guess, I'd say that Mills is actually closer to having a 64.5 OA rating.

Brought this back to the top so that the new owner of the Cubs can take a look at it. Please welcome DoctorXXX to the JFL.

really cool thread for the TCL.

Can you explain where you get each of these numbers?

Arm (19/22 X 24 + 51 X .10 = 7.17)
Range (12/16 X 24 + 27 X .10 = 4.50)
Speed (10/10 X 24 + 27 X .16 = 8.16)
CVR ( 4/8 X 24 + 75 X .16 = 13.92)
PVR (2/9 X 24 + 27 X .16 = 5.42)
CVL ( 6/9 X 24 + 75 X .16 = 14.56)
PVL ( 4/16 X 24 + 51 X .16 = 9.12)
