My dad (not Tim) called me last night after he heard the Griffey news. His voice was kind of cracking into a half-sob. Then he asked me if I remembered Griffey's first years in the bigs, as if as a 7-year-old little-leaguer I hadn't plastered my walls with Griffey posters, and it sort of reminded me of what an absentee father my dad was before my parents even split. Good times.

When I was a boy, my dad pointed to him and Landry as the kinds of sports figures to admire. They were clean cut, admirable, family men, and a great athlete and coach.
I put Junior in their class.

That book could have been written about any NFL team (or division 1 NCAA team). It's a violent, brutal sport.
All the great players who respected and genuinely liked Landry make the criticisms from borderline players seem petty. Roger and Tom are not the saviors of the world, and I have no delusions that they are holy men.

(I mean, the real difference here is, I'm not about to call Ken Griffey, Jr. the greatest centerfielder of all-time, let alone baseball's all-time greatest player.)

if it werent for injuries you would be calling him that, I believe he was one of the best to play, injuries ruined what should have been the all time home run king

I wouldn't argue if you thought he was. Comparing players of different eras is flawed, because stats change over time. I didn't see Willie or Mickey or Dimaggio or Ty Cobb play in their primes. Griffey's the best I've ever seen. Cedeno should have been the bridge from Willie to Junior, but he got hurt and let women shoot themselves in his motel room.
It's a shame Seattle couldn't keep him and A-Rod together and add the pieces together to make championship teams up there.

Griffey was a tremendous player. He was the best CF of his era, and as such, a credible "GOAT" at his position.I wouldn't argue if you thought he was.
