The way I figure it, the U.S. wants a tie in this match. An Algeria win is the next best outcome. See the attachment.June 18, 2010 at 06:36PM View BBCode
An Algerian win puts them in the best position to win the group, and given that Algeria are clearly the No. 4 team in the group, I'd take the win over a tie. Really, the outcome doesn't mean too much to the USA -- win against Algeria, and they're virtually assured of advancing (barring an England-Slovenia tie of 2-2 or better, which I think could come down to drawing lots between England and USA for the second spot in the group).June 18, 2010 at 06:38PM View BBCode
I'm agreeing with Tyles. What US really need is to beat Algeria by 3 points or more. Then it will not matter what anyone else in the group does. We will make it through.June 18, 2010 at 06:42PM View BBCode
I'm not sure winning the group is necessarily a good thing - could mean facing Germany in round 2 instead of Serbia.June 18, 2010 at 06:47PM View BBCode
It could. I don't know about that, though -- Serbia would have to beat Australia by an awful lot, and Ghana would have to win or tie with Germany. I'm pretty sure Germany will win the group with six points on goal differential.June 18, 2010 at 06:50PM View BBCode
Actually -- hold the phone. Ghana could just go ahead and beat Australia and draw with Germany, and a Serbian win over Australia leaves Germany out entirely. Nah, too many scenarios could play out -- I'd rather just win the group and take our chances with whoever we'd get in the knockout stage.June 18, 2010 at 07:08PM View BBCode
