great real world waiver wire pick ups?

what are some examples from real life MLB in which a player was picked up off waivers and became decent or great? or examples of great players picked up off waivers and had a good come back?

Give us a time span for greatness, there's always those old vets who have one last glorious half-season after being DFA'd, then fizzle out (see: Jason Giambi on the Colorado Rockies).

Jim Edmonds - 2008 Cubs is a personal favorite. Got released for having a god awful first month or so in San Diego, ended up forming a very viable platoon in CF with Reed Johnson.
