Home-Field Advantage in the World Series

July 28, 2010 at 09:50PM View BBCode

I recently ran into this in the league I am in. Seattle and Colorado both advanced to the world series with identical records. Seattle placed first in the AL, while Colorado was runner-up in the NL. Due to what I believe to be the 'coin-flip' tiebreaker, Colorado secured home-field advantage in the world series. Wouldn't it make more sense, in situations like this, to give home-field to the team that wins its division?

A small issue, I know, but I thought it might be an easy fix.

I'm not sure that "whichever team won its division" is any less arbitrary than "coin flip."

I guess this is a non-issue. But I think that the difference between Team is was the best team in its league, and Team B was not (during the regular season), is somewhat substantial. I understand the playoffs are intended to decide the best team, I just think that when we need a tie breaker, we might as well use something that is based on merit, rather than pure chance.

if the two teams are in the same league, i would agree with you. but we already do that by giving the division winner home field in the LCS. when you're comparing two teams in opposite leagues it's impossible for ABE to be anything other than arbitrary. one could easily argue that the wildcard team would have mroe wins than the division winner if it hadn't had to pkay in a league with the team with the most wins overall, and therefore is a better team who deserves home field in the WS. sometimes that whill be correct. one could also argue that the division winner plays in the better league and that's why it doesn't have mroe wins. sometimes that will be true too. but ABE isn't equiped to make that kind of determination. as it stands, if the wildcard team from the AL has the same win total as the division winner in the NL there's nothing we can do that isn't arbitrary, so i'd rather be completely random with the coin flip rather than try to impose an artificial solution that doesn't have any hope of picking the 'deserving' team in any given scenario.
