Strasburg

I can't believe he's going to have Tommy John surgery. They babied him and did everything right. It makes you wonder if the coddling is worth it, or if everyone should just pitch more innings.

Here's a good take from Joe Posnanski on pitching overuse:

I figured with him not throwing as hard as he does until an advance age, I mean he only got this good his 2nd year in college, his arm would hold a lot longer

Maybe my simD strategy should be used in MLB: pitch them while they can for as long as they can and ignore pitcher health.

Dusty has not been allowed to abuse the youngsters curently on the Red's pitching staff. And Volquez had TJ surgery a year ago. I don't think that can be blamed on Dusty.

dusty baker is responsible for ending the career of mark prior, the zombiefication of kerry wood, the collapse of the housing bubble and the failure to find weapons of mass destruction.

The funny thing is that Bobby Cox and Tony LaRussa have had more promising young pitching careers derailed due to injury than has Dusty Baker.

Just sayin'...

i don't know that's completely true. they have both been managing significantly longer than baker has though, yes? just sayin...

(i should also probably add that i don't really subscribe to the 'dusty ruined their careers' theory. bad things happen to pitcher's arms sometimes.)

We could run down a list that just consists of the 90's and 2000's, and the Cox and LaRussa lists of injured young stud pitchers are similar to the Baker list.

Which lends credence to your point. Pitching baseballs involve some fairly unnatural movements, and the mechanics of throwing various pitches off a mound put considerable strain on the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the arm and shoulder. Thus, bad things happen to pitchers' arms, sometimes.

I was playing 2B when a pitcher ruptured a tendon in his throwing shoulder. To this day it was the worst sound I've ever heard at a sporting event. We were in High School, too, so it wasn't even "serious" baseball yet.

Bad stuff happens to good arms all the time and this is just a really good example of that. Strasburg was handled "exactly rightly" and still is having Tommy John surgery. It is unfortunate, but it is just the way it is.

Mark Prior has 20 strikeouts in 10 innings as a back-end reliever in indy ball in California. Fastball's sitting in the low 90's.

While Dusty didn't ruin their arms, he sure didn't look out for them either. Though Carlos Zambrano was the #3 starter in that rotation, and his main injury has been from too much e-mailing.
