1956 Season Preview

American League:

1.) Seattle Mariners:
Not a whole lot of decline for the starters. Very good starting rotation with exceptional control! Shouldn't see a whole lot of K's from the Mariner's but you also shouldn't see a whole lot of walks either. I expect to see the Mariners back in the W.S. this season barring any unforeseen injuries or a poor showing in the ALCS.

2.) Cleveland Spiders:
Great offense with some very good defensive fielding as well. I really like the rotation with the exception of Snell, but being in the 5th spot he shouldn't cost the Spiders much if anything. Bullpen is pretty solid as well, should help Snell out quite a bit if he gets into any trouble with his 65mph fastball!!!

3.) Baltimore Monumentals:
Unfortunately, I see the Monumentals missing out on another ALCS opportunity this season. I also think they will miss it by a bit more than 4 games and I wouldn't be terribly surprised if LA leap frogged Baltimore and took over the 3rd spot this season. I like the offense but I just don't think the rotation and bullpen can keep up with the other top contenders in the AL

4.) Los Angeles Angels:
Getting really old in LA, i would expect some action from their owner in either selling off some of the aging stars or attempting to make a run for the post season this year. I expect this to be the last season that the Angels will be in the top 4, barring any significant acquisitions.

5.) Kansas City Royals :
Middle aged and getting better but I think the rotation needs a little work/improvement to compete in the AL. I would expect the Royals to creep up a little this season and/or next season as some of the other AL powerhouses start to reach decline.

6.) Texas Rangers:
A mix of very serviceable youth with some handy veterans. I expect the Rangers to improve on last seasons win total of 72, potentially playing some .500 ball!!! Still a few, if not several, seasons away from legitimately contending.

7.) Oakland Athletics:
Sort of a mish mash of middle aged and veteran players who I believe underperformed last season. I don't expect a whole lot out of Oakland who is in rebuilding stages.

8.) Boston Red Sox:
Still rebuilding and the draft classes haven't been too good as of lately. I expect the Red Sox to be the bottom dwellers in the American League for quite a few seasons to come.

National League:

1.) Milwaukee Brewers:
Platt still anchors this scary good rotation and at 26 y.o. Pipgras is coming into his own as an elite pitcher in the league. You can't complain a whole lot about their offense either as they aren't too old across the board (aside from Sabo who is still a powerhouse). I expect to see 3-4 more season out of the Brewers before decline may set in...

2.) San Fransisco Giants:
Very good offense and very solid pitching. I don't think they match up to the Brewers on paper but as has been evident in this league from the beginning, paper don't mean JACK! I expect to see the Giants make another push for the playoffs this season with some stiff competition from the Cubs and Braves!

3.) Atlanta Braves:
Picking the Braves as my "sleeper" team to make some moves this season. Pretty young rotation that has a lot of potential! The offense is middle aged to young as well and should put the Braves in contention for the wildcard in the NL.

4.) Chicago Cubs:
I like the Cubbies hitting but the pitching scares me a little in comparison to the other big teams in the NL. I expect the Cubs to faulter down the stretch and finish in 4th!

5.)Colorado Rockies:
Aging pitching staff and some old to middle aged hitters have the Rockies on a slippery slope toward mediocrity this season. Alcantara should be a solid SP once he develops a bit more in the minors. Not a ton of jewels to develop either.

6.) Brooklyn Dodgers:
Some decent developing youth in the bigs and I love some of the potential in the minors. The Dodgers rebuild is underway and not off to bad start at all. 5-6 seasons and we may see some push toward the top.

7.) New York Mets:
Definitely in rebuilding stages in NY, i expect CW to develop/trade/draft some very nice youth and work his way out of he basement in the NL within 4-5 seasons. Nothing spectacular at the moment but I don't expect that to last too long.

8.) St Louis Cardinals:
Lots of good prospects as the Cardinals have been bottom dwellers for as long as I can remember. I expect all of that talented youth to eventually mature and put the Cardinals in a position to move their way up. Some very good pitching prospects in the majors and minors; and barring some unfortunate flops I expect them to mature nicely!
