walk-off glitch

October 31, 2010 at 09:25PM View BBCode

Tie game. bases loaded, one out. bottom of the 10th. Diaz hits ball past the centerfielder, and the ball rolls to the wall. the runner on third scores. game over. Diaz should be credited with a single.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/boxscore.jsp?boxscoreid=18763048&cityid=19]In ABE's universe[/url], this is incorrectly scored as a double for Diaz. ABE needs to be re-written in a way that this would be scored a single, not a double.

BTW, in the case of a home run, the home run stands, and all runs are counted, even the ones unnecessary for winning the game. Interestingly enough, it wasn't always that way. Way back before WW2, if you hit a home run in the above circumstance, you'd only be credited with a single. In the back of my McMillian's Baseball Encyclopedia they have a list of the 50 or so home runs lost because of this rule. As I recall, Babe Ruth lost at least one home run this way.

while i agree that you are correct about the scoring, i have to wonder why we should bother with what seems to be a mostly meaningless issue.

what if the ball bounces into the stands? would it still be changed to a single from a ground-rule double?

This used to work correctly, not sure why it doesn't anymore.

Oh, it is because it is a +/- play. I don't think the logic is in that area to make sure a guy can't hit a double. I'll consider adding this if there is enough interest.

my issue here is to get ABE up-to-date with the proper MLB rule. i mean it doesn't make sense to have the bases loaded, and a guy hit a double and only one run score. so you end the game with two guys on third and the batter on second? it should be ruled a single. i realize this might be difficult to program.

it should in real life, yes. i just don't see how it would in any way be worth anyone's time to have someone code. it's going to come up, what, three or fourt times a year max? if ABE continues to get it wrong, what negative effect is that really having?

lack of realism.

It sounds like:

A) a rare situation
B) which is scored properly most of the time
C) but not when the play is a +/- fielding play

Therefore,

D) not worth the effort to bother with IMO.

so effectively none, then?

(if you're worried about realism there are a number of things much more relevant/important/common that would be miles ahead of this on any list of changes.)

realism of scoring is important to me. not a priority to you.

or, apparently, most anyone else.

(i mean ABE still doesn't calculate earned runs completely correctly. presumably someone worried about the realism of scoring would find that more of a priority than something likelt to take place twice a season.)

that's commendable. just try to keep in ind that perfect realism is not going to be possible, although getting as near to it as is practicable is of course the goal.
