1950's All Decade Team

December 23, 2010 at 07:20AM View BBCode

Here it is, the All Decade team. I am sure there are some guys I left off that should be on so let me hear it and state your case if you think I screwed it up.

1950's DPL ALL DECADE TEAM

CATCHERS

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458389]Jeremy Garcia[/url] SF Giants -- Future HOF member and the best catcher in the DPL ever. 9 All Star games, 1 MVP and 915 RBI's in the decade.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458284]Roberto McGhee [/url] Boston/NY Mets/Baltimore -- This well traveled catcher had 5 seasons of 27 or more HR's and 6 All Star games

FIRST BASE

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458232]Bob Bowman[/url] Seattle-- 8 All Star Games, 4 Gold Gloves, 1 MVP and 279 HR's in the decade. A true beast.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458312]Pete Nixon[/url] NY/SF --6 time All Star, 3 Gold Gloves, 206 HR's and 958 RBI's in the decade.

*Tough call to leave [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458788]Dave McManus[/url] from the Cubs off the list. He ends up being one of those tweeners who is dominant in half of two decades but not enough in one to make it.

SECOND BASE

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458436]Julio Tobin[/url] Cleveland -- 5 All Star games, 4 Gold Gloves and 226 HR's in the decade.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458258]Mike Batiste [/url] Seattle -- 3 All Star Games, 2 Gold Gloves, 267 HR's, 881 RBI's.

**Honorable Mention to [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7581667]Fred McNaughton [/url] Texas -- 3 All Star games and the '53 ROY award. Averaged 25 HR's and 86 RBI's in the decade. He would have been a lock if he had played the whole decade.

THIRD BASE

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458346]Whitey Kay[/url] Baltimore Monumentals -- 9 All Star Games, 1 MVP, 349 HR's and 1128 RBI's in the decade. The most dominating player of the decade in my book.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458611]Todd Gonzalez [/url] Seattle -- He didn't get started until the '52 season when he won ROY honors but that didn't keep him from getting the nod. 6 All Star games, 1 MVP (he should have a second in '59), 220 HR's and 110 runs a season average in the decade.

*[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458191]Tim Sabo[/url] who saw the country playing for Stl/Boston/Mil/NY just missed the cut with 7 AS games and 2 MVP's. Both the counting stats and rate stats just put him 3rd on the hot corner list.

Shorstop

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458307]Jim Merriman [/url] Baltimore -- 9 AS games, 1 Gold Glove, 1 MVP 1044 runs and 327 RBI's in the decade. A lock at SS for this team.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458381]Bill Bullett[/url] KC -- 7 AS games, 1 Gold Glove, 1 MVP award, 1003 runs, 216 HR's, 262 SB's. Bullett and fellow All Decade winner Luis Woods have been in a battle for the hits record in the DPL.

OUTFIELD

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458547]Luis Woods[/url] Chicago Cubs -- 7 All Star games, 2 Gold Gloves, 2nd in hits for the decade with 1818 and a record 289 Stolen bases for the decade. Another future HOF'er in my book.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458487]Ron Simons[/url] Brewers -- 7 time All Star, Gold Glove winner. Simons put up some great seasons despite playing part time the '53 and '54 seasons. Rumors had it that Simons slept with someones daughter in the organization but nothing was ever proven. He went on to post quality stats for the decade and helped the Brewers to 4 World Series rings.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458199]Lyle Senteney [/url] Colorado -- 6 All Star games, 3 Gold Gloves and 1 MVP award. Lyle was a starter in all 6 games he went to while posting two seasons with an obp over .400 and had 4 seasons with over 200 hits.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458349]Johnny Smith[/url] TB/Baltimore -- 6 All Star games, 5 Gold Gloves, 282 HR's and 924 RBI's in the decade. Johnny helped get Baltimore to the World Series twice, coming up empty both times.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=7458317]Terry Woods[/url] Oakland -- Woods made 6 All Star games, won 2 Gold Gloves and hit 212 HR's in the decade despite only 200 AB's in '50 and '51 combined.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458211]Ray Kneisch [/url] Texas/Oakland/Atlanta -- 5 AS games. 1907 hits, 1060 runs and four 200 hit seasons in the '50's. Kneisch's mark of 226 hits in 1950 is still a record in the DPL.

Starting Pitchers

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458190]Phil Platt[/url] Brewers -- The second pick in the SP draft turned out to be a classic one. 8 All Star teams, 4...yes FOUR CY awards, 2 Gold Gloves, 4 World Series rings, an ERA of 2.64 and a WHIP of 1.08 for the decade. Best pitcher the DPL has ever seen.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458316]Willie Terry[/url] Mariners -- 3 All Star Games, 1 CY award and 171 wins in the decade make his a lock on this team.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458202]Ernie Emmerich [/url] Boston/LA/KC --6 All Star Games 1 CY award and 157 wins in the 50's.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458219]Pete Reed[/url] LA/KC --5 All Star Games, 1 CY award. Reed, the active wins leader won 166 games in the '50's and won 20 or more 3 times.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458244&statsorimps=stats]Ken Tekulve[/url] Cleveland -- 5 All Star Games 1 Gold Glove. The 1st overall pick in the SP draft in '50 didn't get started in the league until '52 and still ended up with four 19 win seasons and an 18 win season in the decade.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458248]Pat Diehl[/url] Giants -- 3 All Star Games, Back to Back CY awards in '57 and '58. Diehl ended up 3rd in the decade in K's and had two 20 win seasons in the decade.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458245]Phil Johnson[/url] Giants -- 4 All Star games, 1 CY award. Johnson had two 20 win seasons and won 149 games in the 50's for SF.

*Honorable Mention goes to [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458192]Roger Weihe[/url] who spent most of his career with Brooklyn then went to Atlanta. Weihe went 108-59 in a short career, only logging 150 innings from '56 to '59. He finished with a career ERA of 2.63 and a WHIP of 1.11. His 2.63 ERA ranks 1st in the DPL all time.

Closers - Relievers

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458697]John Lennon[/url] Seattle -- 5 All Star games and 4 consecutive Fireman awards from '54 to '57.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458231]Bubba Schueler [/url] Rockies -- 6 All Star games, 2 Fireman awards. His 351 saves led the DPL in the 50's.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458449]Al McGeehan [/url] Brewers -- 7 All Star games, 1 Fireman award. 250 saves and 74 wins in the 50's.

[url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7458369]Ed Smith[/url] Giants -- 6 All Star games, 4 consecutive Fireman awards from '55 to '58. Went 44 of 45 in save opps in '56.

Thats it, thats all I got. I hope it was entertaining and I hope I didn't miss anyone that should have been on, this was a much larger task than I thought it would be.

awesome, great list... thanks for taking the time to do something like this

i do have 1 gripe with [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?mode=player&playername=nobody&id=7458247]Billy Looney[/url] not making it. He wasnt a closer but was more valuable than most of those relievers on the list imo with all the innings he ate up in close game situations. He has 150 wins with over 100 coming in relief(was a starter for 3 seasons). Hes still going strong at 40os too :o

I would agree with Looney being a miss on my part. The ratios are sweet and the win total is strong. I think that I must have just missed him when I went over the all star pages and league leaders which sucks cause he was on 5 AS squads. The blown saves doesn't mean much since he was usually in line to either get a win/loss or blown save with Lennon as your closer.
