Colorado's FA Experience

February 20, 2012 at 05:55PM View BBCode

I enjoy reading your guys' take on free agency so I thought I'd start doing the same.

1959

My #1 priority was to lock up Clete Cole long term. I planned this a few years out by having some bigger contracts expire (Trent Bogar's $5.9m/per being the most significant) this OS. I may have overbid slightly but I do have a soft spot for players I've developed myself and the deal only takes me 1 year into his decline. I put in a big bid on Moreland as well but that got trumped (and then some) by Texas so I settled on just strengthening my bench and rotation for the annual injury onslaught everyone goes through. I signed a few older vets to 1 year deals. Hopefully former MVP Bill McGlothin still has some gas in the tank and Dude Cole can put up one more season with a solid OBP. They will be platooning vs rhp in LF/RF respectively. I also took a flyer on Ray Knight to spell the IF when they need some rest and platoon with Cole in RF against lefties. Steve Bradford was brought back to Colorado to provide some PH pop off the bench.

As for the bullpen, I brought back Aikens on a modest 1 year deal, mostly as insurance in case someone goes down. I also signed Skip Drummond to a big deal to close games in Colorado for the next 6 seasons. His injury history frightens me so I'll be cutting down his workload to have him focus on only closing games but if he stays healthy he should be worth it.

All in all I'm happy with the way things worked out. I'm hoping for a solid contribution from rookies Mick Leroy and Eric Block (my primary backup vs lhp).

1960

Last season we started out very hot, holding a double digit lead in the division over the next closest team. As the season went on, the Boulders struggling and staggered to the finish line staying 1 game up on a surging Montreal team. Montreal owned us during the regular season and took the NLCS in 7 games.

Our main goal this year was to re-sign the two hometown free agents, [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9257339]Terry Killian[/url] and [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9257529]Jose Franco[/url]. I thought with Killian's A+ leadership I would have a chance to get him long term at a reasonable salary but those high leadership scores are more a curse than a blessing. On Day 1 he had 3 1 year offers for over 8.5 million, including a staggering $14m/1yr offer (from Boston, I think...can't believe he didn't take it). He ended up signing north of the border in Montreal for a much more reasonable salary but still more than I was willing to spend. I did manage to get Franco on Day 1 and ensure he will be a lifetime Boulder.

The big FA splash came with the signing of [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9257338]John Wilson[/url] to a 7 year deal. I've lacked a true leadoff hitter for a while so it is nice to have a good one locked up for a while. Another signee with leadoff characteristics was [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9257169]Lee Norwood[/url] who we signed to a modest 6 year contract. Lee will start at SS for at least a year while our top hitting prospect, [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9550039]Ernie Harris[/url], develops a bit more.

Colorado's prized prospect [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9516176]Mike Holtgrave[/url] was slated to join the rotation this season but with the unexpected signing of [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9256992]Mike Montalvo[/url] to a very reasonable deal ($1.55m/1yr), it became unnecessary to rush him. Although he is ready now, he will keep his D- health safely in the minors until the injury bug bites and we need his services.

1961

1960 was a good season in Colorado as we were the only team to win 100 games. This was probably due most to the avoidance of injuries during the season that allowed our full team to be out there most of the year. However, it all came crashing down in the playoffs as we lost 2 of our starting hitters (including the previous seasons MVP, [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9256978]Blackie Johnson[/url]), our #3 SP and our spot starter/bullpen workhorse [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9256818]Gomer Winceniak[/url] and we were ousted in the WS by a strong NYA team.

#1 priority this OS was resigning [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9257566]Bill Frock[/url]. Bidding went a little more than I expected and ended up overpaying a little for him, but I have some loyalty to my bits of code so I wanted to keep him in Colorado. I believe he is fairly high in both his B+ velocity and A control so hopefully he can get a few late improves and bump one of those up. With 3 young SPs and Frock, we looked to sign a vet to a 1 year deal to round out the rotation and ended up landing [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256733]Clarence Buzas[/url] who slots in as the #4 starter. Longtime Boulder [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256915]Nelson Grumwald[/url] was also re-signed to a 1 year deal to provide some bullpen help and spot start when the injury bug bites.

On the hitting side we landed former Texas slugger [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9432100]Julian Borbon[/url] on a reasonable deal and veteran utilityman [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256668]Sam Larose[/url] to fill in when needed.

Mostly worried about the lack of pitching depth. We are at the cap limit and had to do some manuevering just to sign 40 year old [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256720]Larry Collins[/url] after last years Cy Young/Fireman winner and only A+ player in the league [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256783]Skip Drummond[/url] went down for 53 days on the 2nd day of the season. Not a fortuitous start.

1962

In some ways a solid season as we made the playoffs for a 5th straight season but also another disappointment as we failed to win a WS for the 4th straight postseason as Montreal took it to us in the NLCS. Most of our team from last year is under contract through '62 so the priority was signing an impact SP which we did with former Cy Young winner [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9309752]Doc Swentor[/url], signing him to a 1yr/$6.5m deal. We also re-signed veteran pitchers [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256733]Buzas[/url] and [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256915]Grunwald[/url] to provide some bullpen help. Both can start in a pinch as well in case the injury bug decides to bite. We also managed to sign [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9354629]Morrie Leonard[/url] to a 1yr contract at the veteran minimum. He was abysmal last year but certainly worth taking a flier on.

On the hitting side, our starting lineup remains intact from last season. We picked up former Boulder and ageless wonder [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9256690]Dude Cole[/url] to provide some OF depth and youngster [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=9591459]Ray Roettger[/url] has received a call-up to help out as well.

Hopefully the off-season improves we got combined with the addition of Swentor to the rotation will be just what we need to get over the hump but the NL will be a dogfight again. Philly, Montreal, Pitt, and Brooklyn all look primed to make a playoff run. If the back end of NY's rotation can hold up they could be a team to beat as well, especially with that lineup. Looking forward to another dogfight in the Senior Circuit.
