Taking many for the team

One of the odd "pleasures" of having an awful team in the early stages of rebuilding is watching some statistical anomalies unfold. Consider, for example, the Beaneaters' rotation in the long-term league.
Joe Surkont has been my nominal ace for the last few seasons. His career mark after three seasons in the bigs is 7-85. By season he has gone 1-27, 2-31, and 4-27.
Not to be outdone is Dominican knuckleballer Jose Niekro, who spent a couple of years in the bullpen before entering the Baltimore rotation in 1954. His career mark is 6-82, which records the last three seasons of 2-25, 2-29. and a particularly painful 0-25.
Last but not least we have Lee Johnson, a rotation staple for the last two years. In 1955 he went 1-33. In 1956, 2-27. So that's 3-60.
What's that old cliche about it taking a good pitcher to lose 20 games?
