Proposed JEL Hall of Fame Rules

October 20, 2012 at 03:02PM View BBCode

Based on some of the thoughts that have been posted, and some thoughts that I have, I'd suggest the following initial rules for our Hall of Fame. If anyone has major concerns with these proposed rules, please post them here.

I am willing to serve as HoF coordinator.

I think voting on players who retired during the '50s first, and then every five or ten years after that until we get caught up is probably the most efficient way to make sure that nobody falls through the cracks. Once we have done that (which will be several months from now), I think maybe the way joetinker suggested at the end of each season would work.

Player requirements

Player must be retired. Special consideration in the first election will be be given those who played in the 1950's and retired with less than 10 seasons played.

Step 1 - Nominations

The HoF coordinator will prepare a list of nominees (based on date of retirement, initially) to present to the league. After the initial nominee list is posted, all owners will have three days to propose any additional players that they think merit consideration. When nominating a player, please post a link to his card and any anecdotal info you feel is relevant eg: was a 5 time All-Star, who retired 6th in HR, 5th in RBI and 4th in OPS- that sort of stuff.

Step 2 - Official Ballot

Once all additional nominations are received, an official ballot will be sent out by the HoF coordinator via a HoF voting thread.

Step 3 - Voting

Each owner in the league will receive a yes/no vote for EACH nominee. The participation of all league members is strongly encouraged. Owners may cast their votes on the voting thread or via u2u to the HoF commissioner (kjw239). The voting thread will be open for at least one week, and may be extended by the HoF coordinator if needed to insure that enough votes from league members are collected.

Step 4 - Tallying the vote

Once the voting thread has been closed, the HoF coordinator will tally the vote. The voting criteria for enshrinement is as follows:

To be inducted into the hallowed halls of the JEL Hall of Fame, a player must receive a minimum of 2/3rds (67%) of the votes cast with a minimum of nine owners voting.

Eligibilty/Renomination Requirements

A. Once a player has been nominated, he will remain on the ballot for a maximum of 3 election votes. Players receiving less than three yes votes in any year will be forever removed from the ballot.

B. A player who receives at least three yes votes may stay on the ballot for a maximum of 3 years before being dropped from the ballot.

joetinker, if you (and others) think these rules make sense, I would be happy to start putting together an initial list of nominees who retired in the 1950s if you can handle getting me set up as the HoF coordinator and the league set up for a HoF with Admin. Thanks.

Sound good to me as well. Can owners "campaign" for a player on the voting thread?

I hope to have a list of candidates who retired by 1959 up for review within the next couple days. Keep in mind that any owner has the right to add eligible players to the ballot before the voting begins if he/she thinks there is a good candidate that I overlooked.
