Lets look at this to more detail. What % of time does the owners team win the Championship if they make the playoffs.

Winning % / Owner / Playoff / W/S Championships
51% bochaba 47 31 24
33% Alpo 423 211 117
33% gryank 184 106 61
32% samtinky 128 70 42
30% simballrific 39 20 12

26% rich45 111 54 29
23% ashuran 191 86 45
23% metfan1 155 74 36
22% rdmsqto 306 146 70
22% Nuzzy 110 45 25

16% Leonard 223 81 37
16% jovis5 166 63 27
16% Buzz 78 38 13
15% Napper 66 27 10
14% nydru 160 61 23
13% Vladoya 38 13 5

First, I don't think anybodys team is all that much better than any other playoff team (see Nuzzy's Power Rankings).

So, I'd say anybody winning above 30% of the time is either living a charmed life, or has there presets honed to where it slanted heavily to there advantage.

If your in the 20-30% range, well thats within norm.

Anybody below 20%, either ABEs got it in for them(is ther such a thing?), or they don't know what there doing when it comes to presets. What could be another explanation (besides luck)?

As for me, well it does give me some relief that there are other owners out there who dont win championships all that often. I thought my winning % had to be the worst on the site.

Looking at my presets I dont know what I could change. Any sage advice?

There's a guy in our other league who is probably the worst on the site.

Hey Buzz,

I've been meaning to add to this conversation since you posted this. You're hitting on one of the most central issues to SimD competition. Here are some of my thoughts on that:

There is measurable difference between the best and the worst of the 4 teams that enter the post season. That difference can be more significant than what nuzzy's power rankings suggest, especially considering that having better players in key roles is even more important in the postseason. The 4th best team that makes the playoffs has to win two best of seven series in a row. IMO, the worst team(usually) has a 40% chance of winning each of those series. 40%x40%=16%.

If you ranked owners by career post season series victory percentage next to a ranking of owners by regular season win percentage, there would be a strong correlation. Only bochaba knows why his numbers are outside of what we'd expect the standard of deviation to be.(I wish I knew)

There are some differences in manager preferences that create differences between win rates, however, I'd say the biggest difference is talent appraisal, acquisition, and application.

Two clear ways owners can improve their chances with the preferences that I notice are:

1. Attempting to steal bases too often or in bad situations(I've seen people attempt to steal down by 2+ in the 9th). 3:1 SB/CS ratio should be your minimum standard. It takes tweaking but it's possible.

2. Quick hook on the SP. There is no reason to pull a SP(who's good) after he gives up 6 runs in the 2nd inning. He is still as effect then as he would be if he was pitching a 2 hitter in the 7th and you'd never pull him then so why do pull him just because a computer simulation made him look bad because of statistical variance.

There are a ton of tweaks that can be made in manager preferences, but IMO the main difference is talent acquisition. It takes time, but I've learned a ton by sifting through past drafts and figuring out how I could better value players and draft them.

There are other factors too - level of talent you are playing with.

I look at my success here as opposed to the GPL. I have 16 more seasons there than here (147 to 131) and the leagues use the identical systems across the board. My winning percentage is higher by .15, I've made the playoffs 31 more times, won the division 11 more times and the WS 11 more times. I'm not doing anything different there than here (and my winning percentage there would be higher if I hadn't just ended a string of no-talent pitching drafts and one year have the 5-6-7 picks, all pitchers, all turn out to be busts).

Luck certainly plays a role in the postseason more so than the 162-game grind.

The roster of owners you're using isn't quite right nuzzy. nydru and gaelriad need to be replaced with caddy and napper.

How do you gain Prestige?
Bochaba

August 29, 2014 at 04:59PM View BBCode

You gain prestige by winning games, awards and titles.

You get 0 prestige points every season for going 81-81. For every win over 81 you get 0.1 prestige points. For every loss over 81 you get -0.1 prestige points. MVPs, CY Youngs are worth 2 points. Rookies of the Year, Firemen and All-Star starters get you 1 point each, and All-star backups are a half point. Then its 3pts for making the playoffs, another 5pts for winning the LCS and another 5pts for winning the WS title. if you lose more than 100 games in a season you get negative 3pts. If you look at your owner card there is a question mark next to the word prestige for that column of stats. Hover over it and you get the break down.
