Blocked Field Goal Fixes

January 31, 2013 at 10:33PM View BBCode

There have been a few issues with blocked field goals:

- Blocked attempts that happened on other than 4th down have had issues with the correct team getting possession after recovery. I "fixed" this before by simply not allowing field goals to be blocked on anything other than 4th down but as I have now fixed this I have removed this restriction.

- Improbable players recovering the ball: Occasionally a ball would end up behind the kicker and someone wildly improbable would recover it like the long snapper. This will still occasionally happen (1 out of 10 blocks or so, because just about anything can happen on the field) but recoveries more than 6-7 yards behind the LOS by the offense should mostly be by the kicker or holder now.

- Blocked kicks were on average getting knocked too far behind the LOS; this has been fixed.

- There was a rare circumstance where a blocked kick could be recovered in the end zone without a touchdown, touchback or safety being recorded; this has been fixed.

- There was a rare circumstance that would result in a defensive player recovering the ball beyond the LOS and the offense getting credited with a first down and retaining possession; this has been fixed.

- Players who might logically be able to return a loose ball after a blocked kick are now more likely to do so, based on their Hands rating (in addition to Agility, plus Break Tackle to get out of the scrum)

- There was a bug where an offensive player recovering the ball beyond the LOS would advance it; the offense can no longer advance balls recovered beyond the LOS.

Please keep an eye on the results of blocked field goals to make sure that these fixes are correct and that I haven't broken anything in the process.

Thanks!

CHI 4/1 NYA 27 4th and 1 for the Bears, they huddle and line up in a Field Goal/PAT; the Trojans line up in a Field Goal/PAT Block.

Kick is into a crosswind to right; Hanna's hold is poor.
The 44-yard field goal attempt by Bob Davenport is blocked by Glen Winkleman.
John Manuel recovers the ball for the Trojans at the NYA 26.
The officials are bringing out the chains to measure....
First down for the Chicago Bears!

That was the bug report that led me to finding and fixing all these issues.
