Penalty adjustment interface

December 18, 2013 at 11:14PM View BBCode

In your Strategy tabs you will now find a tab for Penalties. This lets you adjust your settings for offensive third down penalties.

Right now these settings are not used by the game; I will hook these up tonight or tomorrow. For now, please take a look at this page, make sure you can change your settings, and feel free to give comment on the settings themselves and/or the defaults.

Thanks!

Just checked this out. This is going to go over well in the pay leagues. I've seen a number of posts from owners looking for this to be addressed. Very nice.

The offense is 100 or more yards from the goal line and it is the 1st quarter or later and the penalty yardage is at least 10 yards farther back.

i dont get it.

It was pretty confusing for me also. I wasn't sure how to tweak it.

With these settings the rule is effectively disabled, but it's there to allow someone to set up a rule for it.

The first rule it so prevent teams with strong running games from getting 4th and 1 which they might convert.

The second rule is to try to push teams back out of field goal range.

The third rule may be pointless, but researching how NFL teams actually handled penalties there were few clear patterns, so I added a rule that would allow a team to accept penalties farther back on the field if they wanted but gave it settings that would effectively disable it.

I am not even sure what I was thinking with that third rule. I have replaced it with a new third rule for goal line situations that hopefully makes more sense.

The new penalty handling rule page is now hooked up to the sim.

The offense will have XX or fewer yards to go and is XX or fewer yards from the goal line and it is the quarter or later and the penalty yardage is at least yards farther back.

Shouldnt fewer be more then here? You are only going to move them back (and give them another down) if you can push them out into more difficult FG range. If the ball is at the 20 yard you might want to push them back to the 30 to make it a tougher FG, but why would you do that if the ball we on the 10 (fewer then 20 yards) when it doesnt significantly affect the FG range?

The second rule is for pushing them out of field goal range. The third rule is for pushing them away from the goal line, where some might prefer a 3rd and 15 from the 19 than a 4th and 1 from the 5. I suspect many will disable the third rule.

For the first rule, why not allow a team to specify the place on the field? I might want to specify 0.5 yard inside their own 40 and 1.0 yards between there and my 35.

Also, are penalties possible in the endzone?

Right now penalties are not possible in the end zone. When I first created the penalty system, I excluded penalties from a bunch of situations that might have to be special-cased like penalties as the clock runs out, end zone penalties, multiple/offsetting penalties, penalties during punts/2-point conversions, etc. At the time, I was closing in on the release so I decided all of the special-casing could be done later. As it stands, though, hardly anyone has noticed that, for example, penalties never happen in the final 30 seconds of a quarter, so going to the effort of fixing it is on the back burner compared to many much more important things. Eventually I intend to add things like this, when I have the luxury of time to add such subtleties.

If I add a full range to the third rule, it could be used to do this, to some extent. I'll look at it.
