Where Are They Now? Class of 1989

January 02, 2014 at 08:49AM View BBCode

It's time to look back at the draft from a decade ago and issue another report card on owner draft and develop abilities.

In 1989, the Cubs led the way with three first round picks and Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Milwaukee all had two. That left Boston, Brooklyn, Detroit, Cleveland (now Oakland) and the Youngstuds shut out of the first round. The Youngstuds and the Curve (Twins) also traded away their second rounders. In fact, the only pick Cleveland/Oakland had in this draft at all was a fifth rounder.

For this report, I'm going to abbreviate the player histories in the interest of time, and use the player acquired with your first round pick (for the five who didn't get one) for the Bust/Between/Boom rating. Also - since I didn't do a "Where Are They Now" for 1984, there will be no "revisit" section to update the Between players.

As always, look for your logo to easily spot your team, and player names are clickable. Neither Pittsburgh (Lawman23) nor Cleveland/Oakland (vickiroepke) had a dog in this draft, as their former owners - docjwe3 and panele - were running the franchise at this time.

Pick #1 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806768]SP Mark Sheely = Marley McLean,[/url] Cincinnati Starlets
Went right to the majors out of the draft, but this SP has only spent one season throwing the start of a game; 595 appearances in the last decade with only 23 starts. Currently in the principal setup role in Cincy, the 33-year old McLean has a career 4.27 ERA and no awards. Result? [color=red]BUST![/color]

Pick #2 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806771]2b Don Callahan,[/url] Chicago Cubs
Another player who went right to the majors, Callahan was NL Rookie of the Year in '89, MVP on a 1993 Cubs team that finished third, has five All Star appearances and on track for a sixth. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

Pick #3 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806775]SP Hensley Rosenberg,[/url] New York Skyscrapers
Traded to the Youngstuds in 1991 when the Skyscrapers were in the second year of what turned into an 8-year playoff run (and still possibly nine), Rosenberg was called up as a starter in early August and hasn't looked back. Only 28 and just an All Star this year, Hensley started the Midsummer Classic and his best years are ahead of him as the current Ace in a strong Youngstud rotation. Result? BETWEEN, but very promising.

Pick #4 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806800]SP Kevin Polly,[/url] Baltimore Fire
Coached extravagantly (215 ICs) over four years in the minors, Polly came up in 1992. His highlight line was a 20-win All Star season last year when the Fire won 87 games. He continues to serve at the front end of Baltimore's rotation but looks like he'll miss any accolades this year with Baltimore struggling to break even. Result? BETWEEN, but like Rosenberg, very promising.

Pick #5 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806779]SP Tommy Hitchcock,[/url] Chicago Black Sox
Now the #2 mound man on the south side of the Windy City, Hitchcock has already had a 20-win season, nearly won 20 last year, and has made two All Star teams. He's also led the GGL in Complete Games and IP. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

Pick #6 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806770]SP Skeeter Pelty,[/url] St. Louis Redlegs
Pelty was the third player from this class to go right to the majors, where he worked as a serviceable starter in St. Louis for 7½ years before being dealt to San Diego in their last grasp at a World Series straw. Skeeter spent just one year on the West Coast before coming back to America's Midwest in a rebuilding deal with Detroit, where he's bounced from the rotation to the bullpen. No All Star teams, no awards, and no WS rings though he has pitched in a pair (going 0-3). Result? [color=red]BUST![/color]

Pick #7 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806773]RP Walt Behenna=Orlie Weaver,[/url] Pittsburgh Highlanders
Two years in the minors, then up to the majors where he appeared in 62 games. The next season, 1992, Orlie moved into the rotation and there he's been; until this season where he's bounced between the two. One Gold Glove on his record and a 4.03 career ERA that's gone down the last four years and now he's on the Trade Block. Result? BETWEEN, bordering on bust.

Pick #8 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806826]LF Jon Radmanovich,[/url] Kansas City Kings
Drafted at 17, Radmanovich converted 69% of nearly 300 chances over five years, allowing him to nab the AL Rookie of the Year Award when called up in 1994. He's led the GGL in triples, won a Gold Glove, and is about to make his second straight All Star team as the starting leftfielder. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

Boston First Rounder traded to Pittsburgh for [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=8177013]SP Fred Frankhouse[/url].
Frankhouse won 16 games for Boston in 1989, a year they finished in fourth place but only three games out of the playoffs. He won 74 games for the Green Sox over seven seasons, but never helped them reach the postseason and never reached the heights he had with Pittsburgh. Result? [color=red]BUST![/color]

Pick #9 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806829]C Otto Bettencourt=Jimmy Kling=Chief Barrett,[/url] Pittsburgh Highlanders
Four years in the minors, now in his sixth season with Pittsburgh as their principal backstop. He has a Gold Glove under his belt, an impressive player card, and is about to make his first All Star team. Result? BETWEEN, but my money is on a soon to be Boom.

Pick #10 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806812]C Tom Harper,[/url] Washington Phantoms
A cup of coffee in '92 where he hit .417 with 2 HR in 12 at-bats convinced the Phantoms to make him their #1 receiver starting in 1993. He won a Gold Glove in '94 but hasn't really lived up to the hype yet. Still just 27, there's time. Result? BETWEEN

Brooklyn First Rounder traded to Chicago Cubs for [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7622947]SP Ed Henry[/url].
This 1988 trade did not get Brooklyn into the playoffs. They finished fourth. They did, however, make the postseason in both '89 and '91, winning it all in the latter. Henry was a principal reason in both years, leading the GGL in ERA during '89 and WHIP during '91, with an All Star appearance (his only one as a starting pitcher) in 1990, when he once again led the GGL in ERA. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

Pick #11 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806867]2b Frank Conine,[/url] Chicago Cubs
Conine spent a whopping six years on the farm, learning to play the outfield while there. He made his debut as a fourth outfielder in 1995 and was dealt early in 1996 to Pittsburgh where he has played full time at second and third. He's got good power, has hit 20 HR twice, and is about to make his first All Star team though just B+ overall. Result? [color=blue]BOOM[/color]TWEEN. Let's mark him for a revisit in five years.

Pick #12 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806789]CF Bill Lucier=Rico Suave=Ponyboy Curtis,[/url] San Diego Sandlot Mafia
Moved to RF in the minors and called up in 1993, Curtis played for San Diego five seasons, winning two Gold Gloves. He was dealt to New York (NL) at the end of '97. He is a steady, if average, OF and has not hit for the power he showed in SD after moving to the Youngstud's much larger ballpark. Result? [color=red]BUST[/color]WEEN.

Detroit First Rounder traded to Chicago Cubs for [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=6905907]C King Towers[/url], other draft picks.
Trade happened in March of 1988 and '88 was the last year the Diamonds were in the playoffs. Towers hit 20 HR, drove in 102, and threw out over 41% of base stealers that year. The other draft picks obtained turned into Kelvin Jayneway and John Battle. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

Pick #13 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806818]1b Larry Patterson,[/url] Chicago Cubs
A solid fielder, Patterson was trained at 2b and has worked as a utility infielder since his promotion to Chicago in 1993. He seems to have settled in at the keystone and is getting a career high in AB this season. The last two years he has hit over .300, but his power wanes during the odd years, and waxes during the even ones, leaving his career and future unsettled. Result? BETWEEN, leaning toward Bust...?

New York (NL) First Rounder traded to St. Louis Redlegs for [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7387609]1b Jack Donaghy[/url].
Trade was in 1988. New York went to the postseason that year and in 1990, but never got past the NLCS. Donaghy, however, continued his All Star career in the Big Apple, going to the Midsummer Classic five additional years. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

Pick #14 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806778]3b Arlie Hernandez,[/url] St. Louis Redlegs
Went right to the majors in a bench role for St. Louis, and that's where he stayed until August of '96 when he was relegated back to the minors, and subsequently given his release in July of '97 when he was immediately signed by Oakland where he played off the bench for a year before being waived once again and claimed by the Brew Masters where he continues to be a non-starter. Result? [color=red]BUST![/color]

Cleveland First Rounder traded to Milwaukee Brew Masters for [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=6640571]SP Steve Dunlap[/url] and two other players.
Cleveland was at the end of a six-year postseason run, and Dunlap went to the All Star game in both '89 and 1990, winning the Cy Young and leading the GGL in Shutouts in '90. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

Pick #15 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806794]RP Russ Fermin,[/url] Milwaukee Brew Masters
Called up in '93, the only notable thing on Fermin's player card is the fact he appeared in *100* games during the 1995 season. He's never closed but intriguingly, Milwaukee has moved him into the back end of their starting rotation this year. He's made 15 starts to the tune of a 5.83 ERA. Result? [color=red]BUST![/color] Just 26, we'll allow the possibility this rating can be redeemed.

Pick #16 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806786]CF Hi Trachsel,[/url] Milwaukee Brew Masters
Trachsel came up in 1992 and played center full time, moving to RF in '93 to make room for rookie Casey Evans. Since then, he's led the GGL in no less than five categories, including SB four times. He's been an All Star once and is on the cusp of another election. Result? [color=blue]BOOM![/color]

LATER ROUND SUCCESS STORIES
Pick #19 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806804]C Eric Lawry,[/url] New York Skyscrapers
AL Rookie of the Year in 1993 and about to be named to his first All Star team.

Pick #37 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806828]3b Buddy Allen,[/url] Washington Phantoms
Drafted by the Black Sox, he was dealt to the Phantoms in late '96 for corner infielders Eric Manzanillo and Tim Duffie. The Black Sox won the World Series that year. Good trade. Allen is now the regular at the hot corner for Washington and while not an outstanding player, he's a red letter regular.

Pick #45 - [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=9806862]CF Robin Fahey,[/url] Brooklyn Traveling Wilburies
Drafted by Detroit, Fahey was swapped to Brooklyn in a 4-player, 2-pick deal later that summer. The TW's trained him at 2b and promoted him for good in 1995. He is their starting second sacker and while not outstanding or red lettered, he is dependable and a quite decent glove.

+++

As a league, we did well with the first round this class: 14 red letter regulars, 1 B+, and really only one abject failure who still has a job even at just a "B" overall. Give yourself a pat on the back.

Thank you for another excellent article, ballmark. And for the record, I think Russ Fermin is going to shape up into a rock-solid starter - but time will tell.
