Barry Bonds ratted out

June 25, 2004 at 12:02PM View BBCode

Sprinter Tim Montgomery told a grand jury the other day that Balco supplied Bonds with steroids and then switched him to an undetectable one after baseball started testing. Bonds ended up taking a lesson from the mob and played stupid. He not only never met him he doesn't even know who Tim Montgomery is. Anyway, here's the article:

He probably would have been not having any comment at all. He talked too much, denied too much, and now sounds very suppisious.

I'm don't think I'd like to see a guy who's guilty of using steroids break the home run record. I love it when records are broken, but bulked up roid monsters really piss me off.

I'm sure Bonds is not happy, since he was thinking that the grand jury testimony from the Balco boys and other athletes would never be revealed. I always tell myself to give people the benefit of the doubt but I'd bet just about anything that this guy used THG. He's just gotten so big and improved so dramatically, especially at age 39-40. I can't make an arguement agains those who go with the saying "innocent until proven guilty" and I know he'll never come out and admit it, but there's really no doubt in my mind anymore.

Bottom line is baseball needs to get serious about this and do some real random testing and hand out big time penalties.

Sorry, I still don't buy this... If you read the article, it says that Montgomery split with BALCO in 2001, so someone please explain how Montgomery knew, from Conte, what Bonds was doing in 2003. It doesn't make sense, Montgomery's association with BALCO, the time he was a customer, all can be proven. I find it hard to believe that Conte would discuss what was going on with Bonds with a former client. Unless Conte was trying to bring Montgomery back as a client? I don't know, it just seems weak to me.
I'd like to know who the source is, I thought grand jury testimony was secret, and people who leak information like this can be prosecuted as well. Its basically a situation of someone hearing from Montgomery about what Conte told him about Bonds in court, telling a reporter who tells us, and we have no way to confirm this.
If accessing the grand jury testimony was so easy, if their source is reliable enough, what I'd like to see is Bonds' testimony.... He could have very well admitted steroid use (doubtful he'd admit it), but if you could come clean in secret in exchange for immunity, if you know they're on to you and they have to goods to go after you, any sensible person would admit steroid use on the stand to save their hide, while betting that the secrecy of the grand jury process would be upheld.
But who's to say? His testimony, if ever leaked, would be newsworthy indeed. But this stuff from Montgomery isn't much... Its trash, really, just another accusation onto the pile, nothing new. I thought we've heard it before like 200 times. It smacks of a "lets keep this story in the news" piece, something to get Barry all mad and make a fool of himself. Is it that much a story that Barry is mad over this? Wouldn't any rational human get a little peeved over an accusation like this? Give me a break!!!

In the end, really, we'll never know for sure what really happened. With the downfall of BALCO and baseball's new (lip service) testing (they test weakly... very weakly!) Bonds is still rolling along, putting up great numbers as he approaches 40. I seem to think that if he was on roids, he probably isn't now, and it hasn't seemed to have an effect. He might be better now. Something else dawned on me the other day, McGwire was an admitted andro user, and in 1998 that was no big deal, maybe something that the game frowned upon, but nobody really put up a great fuss over it. Now we're all up in arms over guys like Bonds, but the proof isn't really there, and may never be. There's a strong suspicion there, but its been a lot of hearsay and accusations. We think we know, but we really don't. It seems to be a double standard, McGwire is tainted but not nearly as much as Bonds. So because Bonds is pretty much a jerk he's guilty until proven innocent, and McGwire a good guy he's given the good old boy treatment. What's the deal?

And here's what I mean by fishy. If you believe what Montgomery has said publicly, he never dealt with BALCO and was framed. So what really is the deal, and who's lying? If Montgomery publicly denies doping, but admits in the grand jury, how are his allegations on Barry credible in the first place? How can you believe what he supposedly said in court when we can't confirm that, and he denies it?

[url=http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=ratto_ray&id=1827463]another story[/url]

And I agree with the columnist here. The slap on the wrist ball players get is bull. The penalty should fit the crime, but even if baseball owners were serious about it, they still have the players' union to fight. In that scenario, let say there's a strike or lockout... We all lose there. Its a tough situation.

This would be much easier if Bonds just stepped up and peed in a cup for us. Seriously, if he's innocent what does he have to lose? Nothing. In fact he would gain something, which is all this bullshit off of his back. I know it's an invasion of privacy but he should consider giving it up just to prove his innocense.

So true. Baseball should ask Bonds to take a test to clear his name, and if he says no then everyone will know he uses roids.

June 25, 2004 at 08:35PM View BBCode

Yes he should! I won't deny that he has rights and shouldn't have to pee, but if he truely is innocent I dont understand why he isn't willing to give up those rights for a split second and clear his name. I know if I was being falsely accused of something that big I'd jump at the chance to clear my name and get people off my back....unless I was trying to hide something.

If he took steroids in the past, I'm upset. If he never took them, good for him I'm happy. If he is still taking them now after all the investigations then he is a complete moron. Of course if he stopped taking them and got smaller that would raise further accusations. Look for him to retire after this year just to get out.

If Barry pees clean today it still won't matter. If he peed clean every day for the rest of his career it still won't matter. No matter happens, if he tests every day publicly, and it was part of the Giants pregame show, it won't be enough for people. Most people have already made up their minds (facts be damned) whether Barry doped or not, anyone with a clue knows this, and any non-mandated testing would merely be catering to those who make these accusations, and that's a dangerous precedent to set. If he never tests positive, that still won't be enough proof that he never doped, and probably will do nothing to convince people he's clean today anyways.

The answer to the problem has nothing to do with SF-OF, he's more or less being made an example of...The answer is for baseball to institute a steroid testing policy we can all have confidence in. The rampant allegations and baseless accusations are symptoms of a policy that people just do not believe in. Until baseball has a bulletproof testing policy, the mud will continue to be slung, and the game tarnished in the meantime.

I think both sides should have the common sense to see this and push unilaterally for a better policy... Oh, wait, what was I saying? That magic pixie dust just wore off!!!
