He pitched great today against the Mets. 6 innings 2 hits 0 earned runs 4 walks and 10 strikeouts. He left with a cramp in his forearm in the 7th. This was the first game he pitched in the United States infront of his family. I wonder if he will continue this and will pitch better now that is family is out of Cuba.June 27, 2004 at 08:53PM View BBCode

I think that Contrearas will never really dominate. He will probably be traded to the Expos once the Yanks see that he is only mediocre.June 28, 2004 at 03:06AM View BBCode
Contreras has been a mystery for almost two years now. He is horribly inconsistent from week to week, game to game, inning to inning and even batter to batter. If he makes a good pitch but the hitter fights it off sometimes he gets rattled. There were a couple times today where I started to worry that he would cave in due to bad breaks, like when Lofton muffed an easy ball in center. He walked a couple guys after it but then pitched out of the jam. I dont think he is gonna be the dominant pitcher like he was in Cuba, I dont even know if he is gonna go out and give up 10 runs his next start or pitch a perfect game but hopefully his family being here will help him develop some kind of consistency.June 28, 2004 at 01:28PM View BBCode
Contreras has some great pitches, no doubt, but he seems to have the same speed for each one. He fixes that and he's going to be great, but it looks like he never will.June 28, 2004 at 02:31PM View BBCode
His main problem has been that he is alittle bat shy and has been afraid to throw his fastball which sets up his slider and splitter. When he does that all he throws is the splitter occassionally mixing in a slider and that gets him in to trouble. For one thing, the splitter is harder to control and locate and if the hitters know that all you are gonna throw is the splitter they will make you work and sit dead red everytime. Also sometimes his splitter will slip out and wont be in the dirt, but when he has his fastball going good and he is throwing it he gets away with that alot of times. I dont think that he will ever be as great as he was originally thought to be, but if he can develop some consistency then maybe he will become solid, but it is way too soon to tell. I would like to see him string back-to-back good starts together which is something he hasnt done since late last season.Pages: 1
