Shotgun passing

March 07, 2014 at 04:54PM View BBCode

I have found a flaw causing short passing, especially out of shotgun, to be more successful than it should be. I have put in some fixes today; please keep an eye out for issues with the short passing game.

You should look at long passing too.... just an observation but 3rd and long seems way too easy lately.

It seems like shotgun long in general has gotten a bit too easy. Just another observation but it seems like a disproportionate amount of the YAC comes from shotgun long plays also.

I'm in 4 pay leagues and the completion % of throws between 20-40 league wide seems to be between 48-51% which seems extraordinarily high.

I have some adjustments in for that now as well.

Also, I've put in an additional penalty for out-of-position players playing QB or very low Execution QB's: They can pass for about a dozen or so passes in a game normally (although they still suffer the normal out-of-position QB penalty if out of position), but after that their completion rate will deteriorate. So using an out-of-position QB may work for a light passing scheme or as a temporary in-game injury replacement, and once I implement option plays and fake punts they won't be substantially affected, but trying to use an out-of-position QB and a heavy passing scheme will get poor results.

When will we see option plays?

Option plays have two distinct backfield phases as opposed to one; I need to upgrade the engine to support multiple backfield phases, which will give us options, reverses, reverse options, flea flickers, fake punts, all sorts of fun.

Obviously the game was always meant to support options, which is why a percentage of RB's are built with decent enough passing skills to act as backup QB's. I just wasn't planning well when I designed the way backfield processing is handled and I coded myself into a corner.
