Screen Passes

August 06, 2014 at 02:41PM View BBCode

I've noticed in KWFL that often my team tries a screen pass, even if I don't have this strategy in the playbook.

That's one example : http://football.simdynasty.com/boxscore.jsp?boxscoreid=308074&thid=30381&qtr=2

3 screens ... none in the playbook.

if there's a blitz and you QB reads it (usually becase of his high EXE) he'll call a screen to counter.

The wording for that should probably be changed to something like,"the QB dumps the ball off to..."

probably. "dumps the ball off to", "counters the blitz with", "audible to", something like that.

Audible would be great if a QB could do that during a game more

The way the strategy section is designed, by the time the "screen" line is written to the database, it doesn't know why it is there. I'll have to rearrange some things to see if I can get that info into the play by play.

does it really matter if it knows why? I don't know anything about coding, but this seems to me to be more of a reporting issues than a decision one. can we not just change the actual text to something else? so long as the sim knows why it changes to a screen when it does and we know why it has, does it matter if the sim knows by the time the reporting stage comes around, so long as the text report gives the info? I guess what I'm asking is, is the text for that line related in any way to what the sim does or doesn't know?

I don't think I'm doing a good job with this and I don't know anything about coding, but I'd think it would be easier to just change the reporting line to say something more specific without adjusting the code. can that be done?

Does a dump off and a called screen play out the same in the simulation? A called screen would have the blockers out in front of the ball carrier while in the case of a dump off to avoid pressure, the blockers are involved in pass protection and the ball carrier is on his own. That's a significant difference.

The completion rate is lower but I am not sure about the blockers; I will take a look. Good point!

The strategy is a "black box"; the situation is put into it and a strategy is returned. When the play actually runs, the sim (currently) can't differentiate between a screen called intentionally or not.

In some ways this is a good thing. The defense doesn't know what the offense planned to do, only what they actually did. I need to reveal why the screen was called only to the offense. Hmm.
