I hate it when the new Owner is smarter than me! What is a Pierogis?

Pierogi is the name of the Native American war-chief that defeated the Britiish during the Battle of Three Rivers in 1748.

Nah, just kidding, it's really a tasty dumpling of Eastern European heritage that is boiled then fried - you can get really good ones in Pittsburgh.

So I'm not smarter than you, but probably fatter!

Pierogies are quite excellent, my grandma used to make them all the time, she would stuff them mostly with potatoes and onions, but also other things, Mrs. T's made decent frozen ones when I was in college, fry em with lots of onions.

Tasty, gonna have to ask the better half to make them (or at least find the frozen ones)...

can't believe someone never heard of pierogies. but i'm from the PGH area too and my fathers side of the family was eastern European - mostly polish, with russian, and Lithuanian.

love the comments. my grandma used to make them too - always made enough to feed an army them she would freeze them to give to use when we visited.

also make lots of halupki, stuffed peppers, haluski, and gnocchi. she made a lot of homemade chicken soup too. that's all I can remember.

I had some this summer in Cleveland that were stuffed with sauerkraut - first time I had ones like that - delish.

Also the first time I had smoked pork chops at the same place - served with applesauce.

Now I'm really hungry!

My Grandmother also made them and all the other foods mentioned along with Beet Soup. Usually for family gatherings Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are of Ukrainian descent.

Yeah my grandparents family was from Lewis Run and Bradford, Pa (Northern Pa), also of Polish and German decent, pierogis and the breads she made were great, I was not too fond of the halupkis or the sauerkraut as a kid, a bit more favorable to them now as I have gotten older.

I am glad that they moved down here to Maryland after WWII, I think I much prefer the seafood from around here, although I am happy to have found again (30 years later) Elderberry and Boysenberry Jams that remind me of them, and also my grandpa's favorite candy (that is now my favorite again), horehound drops, I recently ordered a case of them.

It is funny how little things like food and candy bring back great memories, now if I could just get some Straub Beer down here I will be a happy man...

My wifes parents visited us for a month from Ukraine, and her mother refused to let us eat out during her stay. She made lunch everyday and always had dinner for us. We still have some halupkis frozen in our fridge to eat. They truly spoiled us.

I looked it up when I checked out the team.
I figure the team may be in last place but it is well fed!
